The oilseed and edible oil economy in India involves complex interplay between a multitude of stakeholders across the value chain and affects the livelihood security of a large number of small and marginal oilseed cultivators. This sector has witnessed repeated policy changes and the evolution of present edible oil scenario is directly linked to these interventions. Though, the growth rate in parameters affecting domestic edible oil availability remained positive, the rising demand for edible oils and the increasing dependency on imports to meet edible oil requirements, continue to challenge our capacity to provide nutritional security in edible oils. The projected domestic edible oil demand-supply scenario, rising instability in international prices and the significant foreign exchange drain calls for enhancing domestic availability of edible oils through a slew of technology and policy measures. The analysis of key technological inputs in oilseed cultivation and the past policies affecting price, trade and profitability of oilseed cultivation show their potential to re-energize the oilseed economy. A focused approach with specific strategic interventions in research, technology, input availability and price policy can enable the oilseed economy to overcome the challenges ahead. |
