Description The present investigations have been carried out with a view to study heterosis, combining ability, gene action and stability for yield, yield contributing and fiber quality characters in American cotton (G. hirsutum L). The hybrids were developed involving ten diverse parents by adopting half diallel mating design. The experimental material consisting of ten parents, their 45 hybrids and two checks were evaluated in a randomized block design with three replications at Surat, Bharuch, Achhalia and Hansot of Navsari Agricultural University during 2008-09.
Analysis of variance showed significant differences among parents and among hybrids for most of the characters indicating presence of genetic variability. The magnitude of standard heterosis was high (>20.0%) in desired direction for number of sympodia per plant, numbers of boll per plant, seed cotton yield, lint yield, lint index and fiber strength: length ratio. Comparatively low to medium standard heterosis was observed for rest of the other characters.
The best heterotic hybrid GSHV 3047 x GSHV 97/59 for seed cotton yield also showed significant sca effect with desirable significant performance for number of sympodia, number of bolls, ginning percentage, lint yield, lint index, fiber strength and fiber strength : length ratio. The cross GSHV 3047 x G 67 showed significant heterotic effect, high per se performance for seed cotton yield with desirable significant performance for ginning percentage, lint yield per plant, lint index, 2.5% span length, fiber strength, fiber fineness and fiber elongation per cent. A fairly close association between hybrid performance and their sca effects was observed for most of the traits.
The combining ability analysis revealed significant general and specific combining ability variances for all the characters, except for fiber maturity coefficient. Combining ability analysis over environments revealed importance of additive components for all the characters studied based on genetic variance ratio. Parents GSHV 112, G.Cot.10, GSHV 97/59 and G 67 were good general combiner for seed cotton yield and yield contributing characters, and LRA 5166 and G 67 were good general combiner for important quality characters like; 2.5 % span length, fiber fineness, fiber strength and short fiber index. The hybrids, G.Cot.10 x GBHV 139 (good x poor), and GSHV 3047 x G 67 (average x good) having the maximum sca effects for seed cotton yield also registered
significant and desirable sca effects for most of the yield attributing characters.
The stability analysis revealed that genotypes differed significantly, significant variation existed among environments and genotypes exhibited significant interactions with environmental variations for all the characters except fiber maturity coefficient.
Among parents, LRA 5166, GSHV 05/211 and GISV 23 were found average stable for seed cotton yield and yield components, and GSHV 05/211 and GISV 23 for fiber fineness.
High yielding hybrids GSHV 112 x GSHV 97/59, G.Cot.10 x GBHV 139, Surat dwarf x GSHV 97/59 and GSHV 97/59 x GSHV 05/211 were found average stable over environments for seed cotton yield with one or more yield contributing and fiber quality characters.
On the basis of per se performance, heterosis, combining ability estimates and stability involved in the expression of yield and its components, GSHV 3047 x GSHV 97/59, GSHV 112 x GSHV 97/59, G.Cot.10 x GBHV 139, GSHV 3047 x G 67, Surat dwarf x GSHV 97/59 and GSHV 97/59 x GSHV 05/211 hybrids have shown good potential for exploitation in commercial breeding programme in cotton.
