Description The present invest igat ion on “Effect of integrated
nutrient management on growth, yield and quality of papaya
(Carica papaya L.) cv. Taiwan Red Lady” was ca rr ied o ut at t he
Regional Hort icultural Research Stat ion and Krishi Vigyan Kendra ,
Navsari, Navsari Agricultural University, Navsari during the year
2011-12 and 2012-13, respect ively. The laboratory work was carried
out at Department of Soil Science and Agriculture Chemistry for
nutrient analysis and Department of Fruit Science , ASPEE College
of Hort iculture and Forestry, for quality parameters.
The present experiment was laid out in Ra ndomized Block
Design (RBD) with eight treatments and three replicat ions. Farm
yard manure (10 kg/pit) was applied as basal dose as per
recommendat ion. In all , eight treatment combinat ions involving
different proport ion of three organics on N equivalent basis, T1 : 50
% RDN through bio compost + 50 % RDN through inorganic
fert ilizer, T2: 50 % RDN through vermi compost + 50 % RDN
through inorganic fert ilizer, T3: 50 % RDN through castor cake +
50 % RDN through inorganic fert ilizer, T4: 25 % RDN through bio
compost + 25 % RDN through vermi compost + 50 % RDN through
inorganic fert ilizer, T5 : 25 % RDN through vermi compost + 25 %
RDN through castor cake + 50 % RDN through inorganic fert ilizer,
T6: 25 % RDN through bio compost + 25 % RDN through castor
cake + 50 % RDN through inorganic fert ilizer, T7: 25 % RDN
through bio compost + 25 % RDN through castor cake + 25 % RDN
through vermi compost + 25 % RDN through inorganic fert ilizer
along with RDF as control (T8 ). The observat ions on growth
characters, physiological attributes, yield and quality parameters
with nutrient status of plant and soil were recorded and analyzed
stat ist ically.
The growth parameters viz. , plant height (cm), stem girth
(cm), number of leaves, total leaf area (cm2) and length of pet iole
(cm) were significant ly maximum in papaya plant receiving 25 %
RDN through bio compost + 25 % RDN through castor cake + 50 %
RDN through inorganic fert ilizer s (T6) during both the year and in
pooled analysis also. Whereas, the same treatment init iated
earliness in flowering (days). Similar trend was also observed in
physiological parameters like, photosynthet ic rate, leaf temperature,
transpirat ion rate and total chlorophyll content in leaf with
maximum values under the treatment T6.
Number of fruits per plant , average fruit weight (kg),
fruit diameter (cm), fruit volume (ml), fruit cavity index (%), frui t
yield per plant (kg) and per ha (t) were found significant in papaya
plants supplied with 25 % RDN through bio compost + 25 % RDN
through castor cake + 50 % RDN through inorganic fert ilizer s (T6 ).
Regarding quality parameters , minimum physiological loss in
weight (%) and t itra table acidity (%) and higher content of total
soluble solids (0Brix), total sugars (%), reducing sugars (%),
ascorbic acid (mg/100 g pulp) with maximum fruit firmness
(kg/cm2 ) and shelf life of fruit (days) were also noted in same
treatment i.e. 25 % RDN through bio compost + 25 % RDN through
castor cake + 50 % RDN through inorganic fert ilizer s (T6).
Looking to the nutrient status in papaya leaf and nutrient
content in soil after crop, the treatment 25 % RDN through bio
compost + 25 % RDN through castor cake + 50 % RDN through
inorganic fert ilizer was found superior with higher content of
nutrient in papaya leaf and even in soil also.
The data in respect to economics of present invest igat ion
reveals that the maximum net returns of 2,95,528 with a BCR
(2.38) was obtained with applicat ion 25 % RDN through bio
compost + 25 % RDN through castor cake + 50 % RDN through
inorganic fert ilizer treatment (T6 ).
On the basis of results obtained in present invest igat ion,
it is concluded that soil applicat ion of 25 % RDN through bio
compost + 25 % RDN through castor cake + 50 % RDN through
inorganic fert ilizer resulted in higher economic returns with
improvement in fruit quality of papaya cv. Taiwan Red Lady.
