Description Calocybe indica is a tropical mushroom which can be grown under natural climatic condition in plains of Northern India. During the present study seven strains of C. indica Ci-2 to Ci-6, Ci-9 and APK-II were evaluated for their lignocellulolytic enzyme activity, yield potential and their proximate substrate biodegradation. Screening of C. indica strains for lignocellulolytic enzyme activity was done on modified CYM broth with cellulose as an inducer. Strain Ci-6 showed maximum cellulases (endo and exoglucanase, 2.72 and 1.61 μmoles sugar/min/mg protein respectively) and hemicellulase (endoxylanase, 2.29 μmoles sugar/min/mg protein) followed by Ci-2. Under solid state fermentation, strain Ci-2 showed maximum endoglucanase and endoxylanase production after 10 days of growth whereas, after 20 days exoglucanase activity was again higher for Ci-2 followed by Ci-5. Cultivation of C. indica strain Ci-9 had a maximum potential to show biological efficiency of 74.4 % followed by Ci-6 (68.4%). Pinheads appearance ranged between 33-49 days and average weight of a fruit body ranged between 36 to 54 g. The maximum numbers of fruit bodies were harvested from strain Ci-6 (1425) followed by Ci-9 (1377) with lowest in Ci-5. The proximate analysis of substrate analyzed from spawning to end of cropping for cell wall components revealed a progressive decrease in acid detergent fibre (ADF), neutral detergent fibre (NDF), cellulose and hemicellulose (5.72 to 45.73 % dry weight basis). Strain Ci-2 showed maximum reduction (28.68 to 45.69 %dry weight basis) in all the constituents. Strain Ci-2 is the best strain in terms of enzyme activity and lignocellulosic substrate degradation whereas, Ci-6 was better in terms of yield potential and enzyme activity but this correlation pattern was not followed by other strains as closely as Ci-2 and Ci-6 which could be the probable effect of biotic and abiotic factors involved in fruiting morphogenesis of mushrooms
