Description Culling eliminates undesirable and unproductive animals which aids in improving the average production and reducing expenditure on feed and labourwhich ultimately lowers the cost of production and increase the margin of profit. The
data of 15 years was collected on 845 animals subjected to disposal by auction and the parameters used were procurement of animals, breed, species, type, year, milk production range, age, herd strength, number of lactations, lactational yield, age of total herd, age of adult female, cost realized and the reasons of culling.
The farm bred and purchased animals were disposed with highest frequency of surplus (27.09%) and reproductive disorders (34.88%) respectively. Whereas the Cross-bred cows (31%) for surplus, Cross-bred buffaloes (38.33%) for teat and udder problem, Dangi (51.61%) for surplus, Deoni (36.36%) for surplus, Gaolao (31.58) for reproductive disorder,Red Kandhari (46.88%) for off type, Sahiwal (44.44%) for surplus, Jaffarbadi (70%) for teat and udder problem, Marathwadi (37.50%) for off type, Mehsana (100%) for low milk production, Murrah (24.36%) for reproductive disorder, Nagpuri (34.31%) for miscellaneous health problem, Pandharpuri (47.62%) for reproductive disorder and Purnathadi (57.69%) for surplus.
Teat & udder problem (38.33%) in cross bred buffaloes, surplus (31.62 %) in cross bred cows, off type (28.63%) in indigenous cow, reproductive disorder (26.30 %) in indigenous buffaloes, senility (28.77%) in adult male, reproductive disorders (29.97%) in adult female, surplus (61.22%) in male calves, off type (37.65%) in female calf and reproductive disorder (36%) in heifers were major reasons of disposal.
In 0-500 lit range of milk production low milk production (53.52%), in 500-1000 lit range reproductive disorders (40.30%), in 1000-1500 (41.67%), 1500-2000 (51.52%) and 2000-2500 lit range teat & udder problems (60%) were major reasons of disposal.
In age group of bellow 3, 3 to 13 and above 13 years surplus (47.97%), reproductive disorder (32.86%) and senility (78%) were major reason of disposals respectively.
