Description A study was undertaken to characterize Bidri goats for various morphological, production and reproduction parameters and develop prediction equations for body weight. Entire Bidar district was surveyed using the questionnaire formats and a total of 3000 goats were covered. The colour of coat, skin, muzzle, eyelids, hooves were predominantly black. The percentage of horned goats mostly curved was significantly higher. The ears were pendulous in majority with mean length of 15.36 0.65 cm. The forehead was straight, the beard and wattles absent and tail was of medium size in most indicating the presence of specific genetic group in the area. Survey indicated an average number of 21 goats per household mostly migratory, housed at night in closed shed as part of residence. Grazing was the sole source of feeding the goats. The pooled mean body weights among 0-1, 1-3, 3-6, 6-12 and more than 12 months of age were 5.20 ± 0.34, 8.72 ± 0.26, 15.50 ± 0.23, 22.04 ± 0.29 and 29.55 ± 0.18 kg respectively, mean chest girth (cm) were 35.09 1.55, 44.06 1.33, 55.86 1.13, 63.95 1.31 and 70.07 1.24 respectively, mean body lengths (cm) were 20.96 1.10, 26.37 1.35, 32.57 1.90, 35.30 2.12 and 38.30 2.01 cm respectively and the mean height at withers (cm) were 36.96 1.70, 46.47 1.87, 57.45 1.53, 63.90 2.10 and 68.73 2.26 respectively. Average milk production was 0.238 kg/ day, lactation length ranged between 80-120 days. Average age at first estrous, age at first kidding, kidding interval and gestation period recorded were 10.2 months, 19.6 moths, 9.8 months and 158.3 days respectively. Almost 25% of adult females showed twining while only 3% of the breedable does delivered triplets. Variation was observed in R2 values with changing age and no specific trend was observed. However the R2 values in was fairly higher in adults indicating body weight could be reliably estimated.
