Description |
The present investigation was taken up using six male sterile lines, viz., 7004 A, 7006 A, 7008 A, 8004 A, 9001 A and 9004 A and four restorer lines, viz., 111 R, 87 R, 9-12 Rand 84 SR-1. These six male sterile lines and four restorers were crossed in line x tester design and the resulting twenty four hybrids along with their ten parents and three checks, viz., APSH 11, KBSH 1 and MSFH 8 were yrown in a randomised block design with three replications each. Data on ten quantitative characters, viz., number of days to 50 per cent flowering, plant height, number of leaves per plant, stem diameter, capitulum diameter, number of filled seeds per capitulum, number of unfilled seeds per capitulum, 100 seed weight, oil per cent and yield per plant were recorded to estimate heterosis, combining ability, nature of gene action and interrelationship between yield and yield components leading to the identification of superior parents and crosses. The hybrids manifested a high degree of heterosis over the better parent and standard checks for the ten characters studied. The hybrid 11xt3 recorded the maximum heterosis for yield per pian~ while 1 5xt3 recorded maximum 100 seed weight. The XI cross 1 6xt4 recorded the maximum oil per cent over better parent and standard checks in combination with good performance of yield per plant and 100 seed weight. However, it exhibited neyative but not significant heterosis over checks APSH-11 and MSFH-8 for 100 seed weight. Among the parents 1 2 , 1 6 , t and t 4 possessed significant gca effects for several c~aracters. Among the hybrids 11xt3 and 1 6xt were found to be the best specific combinations from ~he yield point of view. The gene action was found to be predominantl¥ non-additive for all the characters studied. Thecssca could be est~mated for all the characters studied however, the ~ gca could be estimated for all the characters except for capitulum diameter and oil per cent. Association among yield components and yield revealed highly significant positive correlation between yield and its components like plant height, capitulum diameter, number of filled seeds per capitulum, 100 seed weight and oil per cent. Path coefficient analysis revealed that number of filled seeds per capitulum followed by capitulum diameter had high direct effect on yield. |
