Description During 2012-2013, experiments were conducted to evaluate the bio-efficacy of different botanicals against the pulse beetle Callosobruchus chinensis(Linn.), Bruchidae, Coleoptera in the laboratory, Department of Entomology, College of Agriculture, O.U.A.T., Bhubaneswar. Life cycle of pulse beetle on green gram at 30±1ºC and 70% relative humidity indicated that an average of 84.2 eggs were laid by a single female.Total larval-pupal period and total developmental period on the grain were found to be 18.9 and 23.5 days respectively. The adult longevity was 8.1 days. Among the botanicals used as grain protectants, oils of citronella, eucalyptus, palmarosa and lemongrass caused cent per cent mortality of the adults after three days of release whereas neem and karanj oil caused 83.33 and 76.67 per cent mortality, respectively. Similarly, no egg laying was noticed in the grains treated with citronella, eucalyptus, palmarosa and lemongrass evenafter three months of storage whereas negligible number of eggs (2.67) was laid in case of grains treated with neem oil. Therefore botanicals like oils of citronella, eucalyptus, palmarosa, lemongrass and neem afforded cent per cent protection upto nearly five months against the attack of the bruchid. Screening test of green gram genotypes/ varieties to Callosobruchus chinensis based on ovipositional preference, developmental period, adult emergence and growth index revealed that the varieties viz. OBGG-182 and CNO-35 were highly susceptible whereas the varieties Pusa-105 and CNO-3 were less preferred.
