Description The present investigation “Study on the effect of different levels of nitrogen in the form of urea on potato production” was conducted during Rabi season, 2011-12 at the Horticultural Research cum Instructional Farm, Department of Horticulture, Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya, Raipur (C.G.) in Randomized Block Design with six treatments consisting of six nitrogen levels viz., 0 kg N/ha (T1), 75 kg N/ha (T2), 150kg N/ha (T3), 225 kg N/ha (T4), 300 kg N/ha (T5) and 375 kg N/ha (T6) applied in the form of urea, which were replicated four times.
Results of investigation on the effects of different nitrogen levels on growth and yield parameters in potato var. Kufri Surya revealed that vegetative parameters like plant height, number of leaves per plant, number of shoots per plant, fresh weight of shoots per plant, dry weight of shoots per plant increased with an increase in nitrogen levels with maximum values being obtained on application of highest nitrogen level (375 kg N/ha). Yield parameters like number of stolons per plant, number of tubers per plant, fresh weight of tubers per plant and dry weight of tubers per plant were also influenced with increase in the levels of nitrogen. However, highest value of the yield parameters was recorded under 225 kg N/ha (T4). Organic carbon (per cent) and available nitrogen (kg/ha) in the soil was observed to increase with increase in nitrogen levels. Maximum organic carbon (0.99 %) and available nitrogen (340 kg/ha) was recorded under the treatment 375 kg N/ha (T6). The maximum net return (Rs. 117323.87/ha) and B: C ratio (1.42) was recorded in the treatment 225 kg N/ha (T4).
