Description Gladiolus is an easy-to-grow bulbous flower crop, especially valued for its use in floral
arrangements and decorations. Prolonged dormancy, nutrient levels and selection of
optimum sized seed corms are the major hindrances in the commercial cultivation of
gladiolus. Laboratory and field experiments were conducted to determine the method of
breaking dormancy, nutrient levels and corm size on growth, yield and quality of
gladiolus. Corms treated with VAM+ Azospirillum+ Azotobactor + RDF (T15) with seed
corm size (> 4.5 cm diameter) gave significantly better sprouting, growth and yield
parameters viz. initial sprouting (21.0 days), 50 per cent (19.0 days) and 100 per cent
sprouting (29.0 days respectively), plant height (29.73 cm, 80.53 cm and 80.86 cm at 30,
60 and 90 DAS respectively), leaves plant-1 (5.06, 5.73 and 10.20 at 15, 30 and 60 DAS
respectively), emergence of spike (61.6 days), 50 per cent (73.6 days) and full
blooming, (79.66 days respectively), spikes per plant (5.00), spikes per plot (23.33)
spikes per ha (458333) and corm and cormel yield per plant (3.66, 5.08), diameter of
corm (0.97 cm) thickness of corm (1.33 cm) were recorded as compared to control and
other treatments.
Seed corms treated with GA3 @ 250 ppm recorded significant least number of days to
sprout emergence (17.88 days), 50% sprouting (23.66 days) in addition to increase the
sprouting percentage to the extent of 99.7%. Hence this GA3 @ 250 ppm and
biofertilizer combination with larger seed corm size can be recommended for application
in commercial cultivation of gladiolus.
