Description The study was conducted in the Eastern Dry Zone (EDZ) of Karnataka
state during the year 2010-11 to know the socio-economic status and
achievement motivation of farmers practicing organic farming. The
results indicated that majority (82.50 %) of the respondents were
belonged to middle age group and 43.33 percent of the respondents were
in the range of medium annual income. More than two-fifth (42.50 %) of
the respondents had medium social participation, half of the respondents
had medium Extension participation, 45.83 % of respondents had
medium Mass media participation. Little more than three fourth
(77.50%) of respondents had medium Economic motivation. More than
one-third (39.17 %) of farmers had high cosmopolitenes. Regarding
adoption of organic farming practices 42.50 % of the farmers were found
under high adoption category. Majority (70.35 %) of the farmers
consulted progressive farmers, followed by Agricultural Assistants (67.17
%) as the sources of information. More than two-fifth of the farmers
(41.67 %) had medium level of socio-economic status. Further more than
half of the respondents (51.67 %) had medium landholding. More than
one-third (38.33 %) of respondents had high school education, 65.00 %
of the respondents had pakka house and all the respondents were
practicing agriculture as main and single occupation. Majority (66.67 %)
of the respondents were belonged to OBC category. Fifteen per cent of the
respondents were having draught animals as farm power and 58.33 %
owned the MB plough, followed by 39.17 per cent of the farmers
possessed wooden plough. A large majority (98.33 %) of the respondents
were possessed bicycle, followed by Television (95.00 %). Ninety five
percent of the respondents had small family of less than five members.
Thirty five per cent of the respondents had medium level of achievement
motivation and almost equal percentage (34.17 %) of respondents had
high level of achievement motivation. The major constraints expressed by
the farmers relating to organic farming were (i) Recommended Bio-control
practices are of high cost and not effective in controlling pests. (ii)
Scarcity of FYM and other organic manures. And (iii) Lack of market
information and market access.
