Description Ex-post-facto research design was followed in
eight selected ·villages from eight mandals of Khammam
district for the study of training needs of tribal
farmers on HYVs of Paddy cultivation. A total of
hundr~d respondents were selected as sample. An interview
schedule with the measurement of all variables was
used for collection of data.
Majority of the tribal farmers were middle
ayed, illiterate, small farmers, possessed average farm
machinary, medium extension contact, medium exposure to
mass-media, medium information seeking behaviour, low
social participation, medium urban contact, medium
scientific orientation and middle income group.
Training needs in knowledge and skills of
tribal farmers were also found. Respondents indicated
the follo\tling- training needs in knowledge " \tleed
control, seeds and sowing, land preparation, post
harvest technology, fertilizer management, transplanting,
disease control, nursary raising, Insect control
and water management" \tlere the areas in their
respective order in which the respondents needed training
as per ranking.
Regarding training needs in skills they indicated
that "Land preparation, seeds and sowing, post
harvest technology, weed control, nursery raising,
water · management, fertilizer management, · insect
control, disease control and transplanting" were the
areas in their respective order in which respondents
needed training as per ranking.
Training needs in kno\'lledge was significantly
associated with age, negetively significant with
education, extension contact, mass-media· exposure,
information seeking behaviour, social participation and
scientific orientation. Farm size, income were found
to be non-significant. Farm implements and machinary
and urban contact were found to be negetively nonsignificant
with training need in knowledge.
Training needs in skill had significant

scientific orientation. Farm size, farm
implements and machinery, urban contact, and income
were found to be negetively -significant association
with training needs in skill.
Majority of the tribal farmers preferred to
under go non-institutional type of training with two
days duration before commencement of Kharif season.
DGmonstration method of training \'lith 10 - 20 members
size of the group for a frequency of twice in a year
was desired.
Suggestions like subsidy on inputs, supply of
credit in advance, visits of extension personnel,
provision of market, Transport and irrigation fecilities
were expressed by the tribal farmers.
In the light of above findings suggestions for
future research were also highlighted. These suggestions
offered in this study if followed by concerned
tribal development authorities there will be remarkable
results.
