Description Arecanut is one of the most important commercial crops in
Karnataka and it has the never ending list of uses. It finds a place in all
religious, social and cultural functions. Although the production of
arecanut is localized in a few states, the commercial product is widely
distributed all over the country and is consumed by all classes of people.
Arecanut economy is currently facing crisis from several fronts. Keeping
these in background the present study was taken in Karnataka.
The results found that price fluctuation and labour scarcity are the
major threat across all the regions. In traditional regions of RBT and
WCT, production is effected more by pests and diseases such as
koleraga, root grab, YLD (yellow leaf disease) etc, compared to the nontraditional
regions of RBT. Further study found that alternative/potential
products from arecanut can be produced such as tannin, areca fat;
alkaloids and areca extract which are of having greater demand in the
market.
The study also found that the cost of cultivation of arecanut in the
traditional region of RBT was higher compared to non-traditional region
of RBT and the traditional region of WCT. The net loss over total cost in
case of traditional and non-traditional regions of RBT was Rs.7499/acre
and Rs.11836/acre respectively and the gains in traditional region of
WCT was Rs.6857/Acre. Hence, while recommending the MSP, cost of
cultivation of all the regions has to be taken into consideration separately
in order to protect the interest of farmers in all the regions.
