Description |
The present investigation was carried out during rabi, 2009-2010 to study the “Evaluation of redgram [Cajanus cajan (L.) Millspaugh] varieties for physiological efficiency in rabi”. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Block Design with three replications in the wet land farm of S.V. Agricultural College, Tirupati. Treatments consist of six early maturing cultivars (ICPL 85063, ICPL 87119, LRG 30, PILER LOCAL, TRG 21, TRG 7) matured by 135 days and four long duration varieties (ICPL 8863, PRG 148, LRG 41 and TRG 22) matured by 165 days. Observations were recorded on growth parameters at 15 days interval, nutrient contents in leaves, stem and pods at different crop growth stages and yield and yield attributes. Significant differences were observed among the cultivars for plant height, number of branches, dry matter production, growth characters and nutrient concentration. Among the early maturing cultivars tested, Piler local recorded highest plant height (120.4cm), number of branches (10.8), root dry matter (4.27 g plant-1),pod dry weight (24.86 g plant-1), total dry matter (46.58 g plant-1), leaf area (406.86 cm2 plant-1), leaf area index (0.542), leaf area duration (11.16 cm2 day-1), SLA (86.49cm2 g-1), SCMR (41.56), number of pods per plant (140.4), harvest index (44.98%) and seed yield (1672kg/ha). However, LRG 30 recorded highest leaf dry matter (5.48 g plant-1),stem dry matter (14.24 g plant-1),CGR(5.789 g m2 day-1), RGR (0.010g g-1 day-1), NAR (0.824 mg dm2 day-1), number of seeds per pod (3.5). Test weight (11.0g) was more in ICPL 87119. Days to 50 % flowering (69.0) was less in Piler local when compared to other cultivars. Piler local also recorded higher concentration of nitrogen and phosphorus in leaves, stem and pods. Similarly the uptake of nitrogen and phosphorus was also high in different plant organs of Piler local. Among the late maturing cultivars tested, LRG 41 recorded highest plant height (131.13cm), number of branches (11.9), leaf dry matter (6.40g plant-1),stem dry matter (22.12 g plant-1), root dry matter (5.74 g plant-1),pod dry matter(23.83 g plant-1), total dry matter (57.86 g plant-1), leaf area(414.7cm2 plant-1), leaf area index(0.552), leaf area duration(11.32cm2 day-1), CGR (2.92g m2 day-1), RGR(0.004g g-1 day-1), NAR (0.397 mg dm2 day-1), SLA (65.01cm2 g-1), SCMR(43.4), number of pods per plant (161.6), number of seeds per pod(3.7), harvest index(47.95%), and seed yield(1862 kg /ha) where as test weight was more in ICPL8863 (11.3g) when compared to other cultivars. LRG 41 also recorded higher concentration as well as uptake of N and P in different plant organs. In the present investigation LRG 41 recorded higher yield of 1862 kg/ha with higher harvest index of 47.95 followed by TRG 22 with an yield of 1714.3 kg/ha among the long duration varieties. Among the early maturing cultivars, Piler local recorded higher yield of 1672.7 kg/ha with harvest index of 44.98 followed by ICPL 8863 with an yield of 1604.0 kg/ha. Hence these four verities (LRG 41, TRG 22, Piler local and ICPL 8863) were considered suitable for rabi cultivation in Chittoor region. |
