CUCUMBER (Cucumis sativus L.)

Description ABSTRACT
The present investigation entitled “Studies on seed priming in cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.)” was
carried out in the Department of Vegetable Science, Dr Y S Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry,
Nauni, Solan, HP during 2010 and 2011. The seeds of cucumber cv. K-75 were primed with nineteen treatments
comprising of osmo priming (PEG 6000 -0.5 MPa for 24 hrs, PEG 6000 -1.5 MPa for 24 hrs, PEG 6000 -0.5
MPa for 48 hrs and PEG 6000 -1.5 MPa for 48 hrs), halo-priming (Na2HPO4 10-3 M for 24 hrs, Na2HPO4 10-1
M for 24 hrs, KH2PO4 10-3 M for 24 hrs, KH2PO4 10-1 M for 24 hrs, Na2HPO4 10-3 M for 48 hrs, Na2HPO4 10-1
M for 48 hrs, KH2PO4 10-3 M for 48 hrs and KH2PO4 10-1 M for 48 hrs), priming with growth regulator (GA3
100 ppm for 24 hrs, GA3 200 ppm for 24 hrs, GA3 100 ppm for 48 hrs and GA3 200 ppm for 48 hrs), hydro
priming (Distilled water for 24 hrs and Distilled water for 48 hrs) and a control (Untreated). There were two
sets of experiments, one on seed storage conducted in the laboratory and another was conducted in the field.
The seed storage studies were carried out in the laboratory and the stored seeds were tested in a Complete
Randomized Design (CRD) with four replications. Seeds were primed with different primers at sub optimal
temperature (150C) and were stored for three, six, nine and twelve months before testing for germination and
vigour at 150 and 250C in the germinator using paper towel and in the sand under ambient conditions. It was
found that seeds primed with PEG 6000 -1.5MPa for 24hrs exhibited best results in terms of characters like
speed of germination, germination, seedling length and dry weight, vigour index-I and II when these were stored
up to six months, however after six months of storage, there was a sharp decline in germination and vigour of
primed seeds.
In the field studies, the seeds were sown in the field during first week of March, 2010 and 2011in a
Randomized Block Design (RBD) with three replications having 1.5x1.0m spacing and 6.0x4.0m plot size. It
was found that, treatment of seeds with PEG 6000 -1.5 MPa for 24 hrs proved to be the best treatment for
characters like days to 50 per cent emergence, total emergence, days to first picking, number of primary
branches per plant, vine length, fruit weight, fruit length, fruit diameter, number of green fruits per plant, fruit
yield, number of fruits per plant, seed yield, 1000-seed weight, severity of powdery and downy mildew and
some characters studied in the laboratory pertaining to harvested seed such as speed of germination,
germination of seeds, seedling length and dry weight and vigour index-I and II. Treatment of seeds with PEG
6000 -1.5 MPa for 24 hrs was also rated as the best treatment as it resulted in maximum green yield (199.72
q/ha), seed yield (168.83 kg/ha), net returns (Rs.149993.11 for green fruit yield and Rs. 1, 29, 941.41 for seed
yield) and B:C ratio (3.02:1 for green fruit yield and 2.75:1 for seed yield). Priming of seeds with PEG 6000 -
1.5 MPa for 24 hrs may, therefore be recommended to the growers and seed producers after on-farm testing in
multi location trials for better storage and higher yield in cucumber.
