Description Soil test based fertilizer prescription for targeted yields were carried out in maize
(Zea mays) based on gradient study at the college farm, College of Agriculture,
Rajendranagar, Hyderabad. The soil was sandy loam in texture, neutral in reaction with 7.3
pH, and normal in electrical conductivity (ECe) with O.21dSm-1. The nutrient status was
low in available nitrogen (264 kg N ha-1), high in phosphorus (68 kg P2O5 ha-1) and high in
potassium (450 kg K2O ha-1). The soil fertility gradient was developed by growing sorghum
(variety CSH-9) the results showed a wide variability in the soil nutrient available status
between the strips after the harvest of the crop reflected in the dry matter yield of 31.80,
72.80 and 74.20 q ha-1 as recorded in OX, lX and 2X fertility gradients.
After harvest of sorghum, maize variety DHM-117 was sown during kharif 2012-13
for soil test crop response correlation studies with twenty one treatments involving eighteen
combination levels of NPK through fertilizers and three controls imposed in each fertility
gradient. Vermicompost was applied as per the treatments as control, 2.5 t ha-1 and 5.0 t ha-
1. The grain and stover yields were found to increase with an increase in the soil fertility
and N, P and K fertilizer and vermicompost application significant influence on uptake of
N, P and K nutrients.
Grain yield was significantly related with ABDTPA extracted P and modified
Olsen’s-P. It also had a high and significant correlation with soil N, P and K and applied
fertilizer nutrients. The relation between plant uptakes of N and P with Alkaline
permanganate N and modified Olsen’s-P was also significant.
Multiple regression equations were fitted related for predicting grain yield with the
soil and fertilizer nutrients and their interactions. Using the regression equations, fertilizer
adjustment equations were derived for attaining maximum yield, maximum profit and
desired rate of return.
Using the field data, the basic interrelation on nutrient requirement of N, P2O5 and
K2O (2.67, 1.64 and 2.27 kg for producing one quintal of maize grain yield respectively)
soil efficiency (%) 21.6 for N, 85.2 for P and 11.3 for K respectively and fertilizer and
vermicompost efficiency were computed.
The targeted yield equations for N, P and K nutrients were as follows:
FN = 3.83* T - 0.31* SN -0.68* VC
FP2O5 = 1.64* T - 0.85* SP2O5 - 0.59* VC
FK2O = 0.95* T - 0.05* SK2O – 0.21* VC
Using the targeted yield equations of fertilizer prescription with vermicompost
application @ 2.5 and 5.0 t ha-1 a ready reckoner for optimizing fertilizer doses at varying
soil test values has been developed for attaining grain yield target of 50, 60 and 70 q ha-1.
Using the multiple regression models of post harvest soil test values and grain yield,
vermicompost and fertilizer variables, the post harvest soil values were also predicted,
which are useful for prescription of soil test based fertilizer dose for the subsequent crop in
Alfisols.
