Description |
Agriculture is the backbone of India and Indian economy. More than half of the Indians still depend upon agriculture for their livelihood and it contributes nearly about 14.2 per cent to the total GDP. Agriculture input industry is experiencing tremendous changes for last few years. New products and innovations are received quite well by the Indian farmers. Plant Growth Promoters (PGP) and Secondary Plant Nutrients (SPN) manufacturing plants are emerging in the field of agriculture. Growing concern for the usage of eco- friendly inputs, Government support and increasing awareness among the farming community are emphasising the need for usage of PGP and SPN. Growing area under commercial crops, horticultural crops, recent Government polices such as NBS (Nutrient Based Subsidy) are encouraging factors forecasting the better future for these nascent industries. The exponential growth of PGP and SPN industries are solid evidences for the myriads of potential for the industry. The present study was carried out by collecting the secondary data from various journals, magazines, company records and company personnel’s on sales, market size and market structure of PGP and SPN industries. Primary data was accessed from 120 farmers i.e. 60 users and 60 non-users were interviewed from two districts of Andhra Pradesh to know the impact of the usage with the help of a pretested questionnaire. xii The present study focused on major players of SPN and PGP industry and their functioning. Market size, structure was determined and future potential was estimated. Results showed an estimated market potential for granular and liquid formulations of PGP industry as 171108.65 mt and 8698.57 kl. SPN industry is 1198426.435 mt. in study of volume terms. Study revealed that, top ten companies of PGP holds a share of 60 per cent, top five firms of SPN constitutes a market share of 30 per cent. It was examined that PGP industry is mainly dominated by the established pesticide companies while SPN industry is a subset of fertilizer companies. Growth rates were estimated for the both industries. Study revealed CAGR were 14.3 and 9.1 for PGP and SPN industries respectively. Past performance of the products, availability in the market, price, trade credit and promotion are the driving forces of demand creation for these products. Impact of usage of PGP and SPN on yield and income levels of the farmers was studied. It was observed that usage of PGP and SPN resulted into 5-10 per cent increase in the crop yield. Comparative study on users and non-users of PGP and SPN was made to get a clear picture about economics of application of PGP and SPN. Result showed that less than 1 per cent of additional costs on these products lead to 10-20 per cent incremental income to the user farmers. Inspite of wonderful results, still companies are adopting push strategy to promote these products. There is a need for co-ordination from both public and private sectors to enlighten the farming community to adopt these innovative products and to improve standard of living. |
