The present investigation entitled ‘‘Studies on gamma rays induced morphological changes and mutants in gladiolus varieties’’ was conducted at Vegetable Research Farm, Department of Horticulture, Institute of Agricultural Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi (U.P.) during 2011-12, 2012-2013 and 2013-2014. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Block Design comprising of 5 gamma doses i.e., 1.5 kR, 2.5 kR, 3.5 kR, 4.5 kR, 5.5 kR and control (untreated) on seven varieties of gladiolus Aldebaran, Jyotsana, Legend, Praha, Punjab Dawn, Pusa Kiran and Tiger Flame. The results of the present study regarding influence of different gamma irradiation treatments on growth, flowering, corm and cormel yield and post-harvest studies in different varieties along with varietal response on these parameters have been summarized in this chapter. On the basis of three years experimental findings it may be concluded that medium to higher doses of gamma rays i.e., 2.5 kR, 3.5 kR and 4.5 kR to be applied in gladiolus corms for improvement. Stable mutant were found and isolated in gladiolus cultivar Pusa Kiran of darker throat of red purple colour at 4.5 kR. A stable yellow colour mutant in cv. Tiger Flame at 4.5 kR. During VM3 a stable white colour mutant in cv. Punjab Dawn was observed at 2.5 kR. A stable mutant with streaks formation was recorded in cv. Tiger Flame at 3.5 kR. Another stable yellow colour lower petals mutant in cv. Tiger Flame at 4.5 kR was also isolated. In cultivar Tiger Flame at 3.5 kR a mutant of yellow colour lower petals with densely arranged flowers on spike. Gamma irradiation doses at 1.5 kR and 2.5 kR found beneficial for various growth, flowering and post-harvest traits in gladiolus. Among gladiolus varieties, cvs. Tiger Flame, Punjab Dawn and Jyotsana responded well to various gamma doses and may be used for improvement of varieties through mutation breeding. |
