Description The present study entitled “Assessment of Nutritional Status of Adults Suffering from Cardiovascular Disease and Impact of Nutrition Counseling” was undertaken to study the etiological factors, dietary habits, nutrients intake and anthropometric measurements of the male and female respondents and to study the impact of nutrition counseling on dietary assessment, anthropometric measurements and biochemical profile of the selected CVD patients from Hisar and Yamunanagar cities of Haryana state. Initially data was collected from 200 respondents (100 from each city), it was found that majority of the respondents were in the age group of 40 to 50 years, educated at postgraduate level, living in nuclear family, engaged in service, whereas female respondents were either housewives or in service.Life style of subjects was found to be largely sedentary with much greater time spent in sedentary activities. Lack of exercise, higher body weight and BMI were the commonest risk factors followed by past family history. Majority of the male and female respondents had fasting and post prandial blood glucose level, TC, TG, LDL-C, VLDL-C and blood pressure significantly higher and HDL-C had significantly lower their desirable values. Mean daily intake of cereals, milk and milk products, fats and oils and sugar and jaggery by CVD subjects (male and female) were found significantly higher, while mean daily intake of pulses, green leafy vegetables, other vegetables, roots and tubers and fruits were found significantly lower than their suggested intakes. With regard to nutrient intakes, mean daily intake of energy, carbohydrate and fat was higher, whereas other nutrient intake was lower than their recommended daily allowances by the male and female respondents in both cities. Out of 200 CVD subjects from both cities, 40 patients from each city were selected and divided into two groups (control and experimental) of 20 each. Nutrition counseling was imparted only to the experimental group. The impact of nutrition counseling was assessed in term of their dietary intake, anthropometric measurements, biochemical profile and gain in knowledge, which revealed that after nutrition counseling, mean daily intake of cereals, milk and milk products, fats and oils and sugar and jaggery was significantly reduced while mean intake of pulses, green leafy vegetables, roots and tubers, other vegetables and fruits were found significantly higher by the experimental subjects in both cities. Mean daily intake of energy, carbohydrate, total fat (specially saturated fats) was significantly reduced while mean daily intake of protein, dietary fibre, iron, β-carotene, folic acid and vitamin C was increased after nutrition counseling by experimental subjects. Due to consumption of low intake of energy yielding foods, experimental subjects maintained negative energy balance and had significantly lower body weight, BMI and WHR as compared to their initial values. Whereas, non-significant change was observed in mean daily intake of foods stuffs and nutrients in control group and had positive energy balance. Significant reduction was also observed in lipid profile, fasting and post prandial blood glucose and blood pressure level of experimental subjects. But non-significant change was observed in control subjects.Gain in post-exposure knowledge scores was also significantly higher in experimental subjects as compared to control subjects. Hence, it can be inferred from the present study that nutrition counseling can be effective measure for bringing the significant changes in the nutritional profile as well as nutrition knowledge of CVD patients.
