Description |
Adolescence is the age between 10 and 19 years. Reproductive health is an indispensable ingredient of health, especially during adolescence and a major determinant of human development. In the age group of 10-24 years, the health needs of adolescents have neither been researched nor addressed adequately. Particularly in case of adolescent girls, their reproductive health needs are often misunderstood, unrecognized or underestimated, especially so among tribal adolescent girls. So the present study ‘Adolescence Reproductive Health (ARH) communication among tribal girls of Adilabad district – an assessment and accomplishment through edutainment’ was planned to measure existing reproductive health communication among tribal adolescent girls and to develop edutainment material incorporating ARH messages in the form of animations and games to bring change in their knowledge, thereby practices. The experimental research design was selected for the study with sample of 120 school children 30 from each Tribal Ashram school. Adilabad district was selected purposively because tribes are densely populated compared to other districts of the state. ARH messages were identified from the experts. Pretest was conducted. Content was developed on identified ARH issues and subjected to content analysis. Edutainment material in print and electronic form were developed, incorporating ARH content. Utilising these edutainment material, ARH education was conducted for six days @ two hours per day in four Ashram schools. The effectiveness of edutainment materials and results was assessed through the statistical analysis. Following findings emerged from the study. Majority of the respondents were in the age of 13-14 years. In case of class of study half of the sample were in 8th class, followed by 9th (36.7%) and 7th (13.3%) classes. Ordinal position of the respondent revealed almost equal percent on first and second. If the male child was in the first and second ordinal positions, such families limited with 3 children. When waited for male child, female children were found in third to fifth positions. Out of the total sample, 75.8% attained menarche and 24.2% yet to attain. Age of menarche started at 10 years and continued up to 15. It was highest during 12-13 years (83.5%) and mean age of menarche was found as 12.4 years. Information seeking behavior measured on five intents as stated by Erin (2008), in varied areas showed notable results. Adolescent girls have intent for information to get complete picture, followed by getting a clearer picture and changed picture. Menstrual health was found to be most preferred category of information. With regard to sources of information, the adolescent girls were seeking information through interaction more than any other sources. Mothers, teachers and friends were the major interaction categories. Media exposure, one of the profile characteristics of the respondents revealed more for TV and books. ARH issues relevant to adolescent girls were identified with the help of an expert group. The topics with mean value of 0.9 and above were included and others were deleted. Based on the content of ARH issues, they were grouped under eight broad major topics with 2- 5 subtopics. Adolescence, physical changes, psychological changes, menstrual health, social sensitivity in adolescent girls, nutritional care, HIV/AIDS, games and exercises. Based on the ARH issues identified, information was collected in vernacular language i.e. telugu for content development and finalized for the production of print and electronic edutainment modules to provide learning through entertainment and act as BCC package.Print material was in a form of hand book entitled Kishora Balikala Arogya Karadeepika (Health manual for adolescent girls) which consisted of text, illustrations, puzzles, games, stories and case studies. In electronic material, subtopic wise power point presentation was done with animations and video, to support effective presentation of the content to the sample. Content analysis has been carried out and the reliability of the content was computed using spearmen split-half reliability which was r = 0.84 proving high reliability. Using Cohen’s kappa, the percent agreement of reliability between the raters, was computed as 0.67, which was at substantial level of agreement. These two values empirically judged the content reliable for the purpose. Effectiveness of the edutainment material was measured. Respondents assigned máximum to happiness (2.99), followed by motivation (2.95), Advocacy (2.90), Intuitiveness (2.86), Fun (2.85), Attentive (2.83), Focus (2.81). The level of ARH communication was measured before and after imparting of knowledge on ARH issues in all the four schools and computed for their significance of increase. Concurrent evaluation was also carried out after 15 days of post evaluation, to measure the reliability as well as retention. Pretest mean values were found different in four schools, after imparting knowledge on ARH issues to the adolescent girls and mean scores were almost equal at post and concurrent test. When percent increase between pre and post, pre and concurrent was calculated, there was highest increase in Asifabad and Luxetpet schools. It is evidently showing that the edutainment material gave enough health communication to the sample. A significant difference in all schools was observed after imparting knowledge on ARH issues to the adolescent girls, proving the effectiveness of edutainment material. Also significant difference in all schools was observed at pre and concurrent level. ROI for ARH communication was calculated. Scot (2006), explained ROI as the relative profit that was made due to investment. In the present study it was operationalised as the behavioral benefit that occurred among the adolescent girls in terms of health education due to execution of ARH issues in the form of edutainment material on which some investment was made. The returns on investment for ARH communication with regard to information was 18.93%, which means for every unit of investment, the increase was almost 19 times. It was 21.92% for influence, which means for every unit of investment, the increase was almost 22 times. The returns on influence were more than information. In the present study ROI is a proof, to state behavior change communication through edutainment material is profitable. ARH communication is essential for all adolescent girls. It should be effective to sustain the communication. Hence, based on empirical evidences of the study, a strategy of BCC package for adolescent reproductive health, may be proposed to assure reproductive health right from adolescence, focusing four major areas viz., curriculum and edutainment material, ARH content, media focus and community empowerment. This strategy to provides edutainment material with complete, clear and changed picture of ARH issues, cognitively empowering their major sources of interaction with reproductive information, i.e mothers, teachers and friends and widely using T.V. and news paper was proposed. |
