Description |
A field experiment was conducted on “Influence of sulphur and boron on growth and yield of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L)” at Students’ Farm, College of Agriculture, Rajendranagar, Hyderabad during kharif season of 2008 with an objective to work out the optimum and economic level of sulphur in addition to boron nutrition to kharif sunflower. The treatments consisted of four levels of sulphur (20,40 ,60 and 80 kg ha-1) and each level with the combination of boron foliar spraying at 0.1 per cent along with recommended dose of fertilizers i.e. (75 kg N: 90 kg P2O5: 30 kg K2O ha-1). In total there were ten treatments laid out in randomized block design replicated three times. The results of the experiment indicated significant influence of treatments on plant growth, yield attributes, seed yield, oil yield and other parameters under study. Maximum growth in terms of plant height, number of leaves per plant, LAI, dry matter accumulation, CGR and NAR was manifested at 40 kg S ha-1 alone and in combination with 0.1% boron foliar spraying. The study of the data revealed no significant effect of boron spray at any level of sulphur for these parameters. While RGR was significantly influenced by boron applied as 0.1% foliar spray in addition to 40 and 60 kg S ha-1. Similarly, the yield attributes viz., head diameter, number of filled seeds and 1000-seed weight were also significantly improved due to application of sulphur up to 40 kg S ha-1 alone and in combination with 0.1% foliar spraying of boron indicating maximum values of yield attributes. On the other hand, seed filling percentage, seed weight per head and hence seed yield were the highest with 40 kg S ha-1 + 0.1% foliar spraying of boron indicating the significant effect of boron in presence of sulphur. Maximum yield of 1658 kg ha-1 was realized with 40 kg S ha-1 + 0.1% boron foliar spray which was more by 487 kg ha-1 over the control (no sulphur) RDF only. There was marginal increase in the yield attributes and yield due to 0.1% foliar spray of boron when compared at a given level of sulphur. Contrary to seed yield, the oil content in seeds increased at higher levels of sulphur viz., 60 and 80 kg ha-1 alone and in combination with 0.1% foliar spray of boron. The oil yield was the highest with 40 kg S ha-1 + 0.1% foliar spraying of boron. The concentration of sulphur in the soil and plant (seed, stover and whole plant) and its uptake favourably influenced by higher levels of sulphur (60 and 80 kg ha-1) applied alone and in combination with 0.1% boron foliar spray. The boron concentration in plant (stover, seed and whole plant) and its uptake was favourably influenced by boron supplemented to 40 and 60 kg ha-1 sulphur. Overall the highest gross returns, net returns and B:C ratio were recorded by 40 kg S ha-1 + 0.1% boron foliar spray. Owing to good growth, yield, nutrient uptake and economic returns, 40 kg S ha-1 + 0.1% foliar spray of boron was proven the best for kharif sunflower in southern Telangana zone. |
