Sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) is an important commercial crop of tropical and subtropical countries. The crop is susceptible to several diseases. Sett rot or pineapple disease caused by Ceratocystis paradoxa (de Seynes) Moreau is both sett and soil borne diseases of sugarcane affecting the sett germination at the early stages of planting. The pathogen was isolated by following standard tissue isolation technique from infected setts and identified as C. paradoxa by studying its morphological characters such as mycelium, conidiophores, microconidia and macroconidia both from host and culture. Among the solid and liquid media tested, maximum growth of the fungus was supported by potato dextrose agar and potato dextrose broth (PDB) respectively. Maximum growth of the fungus was reached on 12th day of incubation. The physiological studies revealed that maximum growth of the fungus was at temperature of 30°C, pH 6 and exposure to continuous light. Starch was best carbon source for the fungal growth. The garlic extract at 10 per cent were found to be effective in inhibiting mycelial growth of C. paradoxa. Trichoderma viride, Pseudomonas fluorescens were found to be effective antagonistic agents against the fungus. Acetobacter diazotrophicus effectively reduced mycelial growth of C. paradoxa and pH of the medium in PDB. Among the systemic fungicides carbendazim and propiconazole and among the non-systemic fungicides thiram and captan were found effective in inhibiting the fungal growth. The management studies in both pot culture and field studies revealed that, combined application of T. viride, P. fluorescens, A. diazotrophicus and Azotobacter chrococcum recorded highest germination per cent of the setts. Combined application of these bioagents also recorded lowest per cent disease incidence, highest cane and sugar yield, qualitative and quantitative yield parameters of the crop along with highest available soil nitrogen and phosphorus content in the field studies. |
