The present investigation was carried out at Horticulture Research Centre, Patharchatta, Govind Ballabh Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar, during 2009-10 to 2010-11 to study the causes and control of fruit drop in Bael (Aegle marmelos Correa). It was found that fruit drop in Bael occured due to embryo abortion, physiological imbalances, fruit borer attack, fruit rotting and fruit cracking. Fruit drop was recorded high in month of July in all fourteen varieties which continued till harvest. The fruit drop showed the second peak in the month February. While fruit cracking was found maximum in month of January. Maximum fruit drop and cracking were recorded in Pant Sujata. The maximum yield was observed with Pant Shivani. To control the fruit drop in Bael three experiments were conducted i.e., effect of cross pollination on fruit drop, role of plant growth regulators on fruit drop and effect of mineral nutrients on fruit drop. In cross pollination studies, the crossing between the Pant Bae 10 x Pant Sujata provided least fruit drop, higher fruit retention and improved the fruit size . Whereas, two different sprays of plant growth regulators, first after seven days of initiation of growth and second spray in last week of June were found more effective in improving the fruit set, fruit drop, fruit retention, physical and chemical parameters of fruits of Bael cv. Pant Shivani. Among the different plant growth regulators, spray of NAA @ 20 ppm was found most effective. Similary, two sprays of different mineral nutrients first after seven days of initiation of growth and second spray in last week of June also proves effective in improving the fruit retention in Bael cv. Pant Shivani. Among the different sprays of mineral nutrients, borax 1.0% was found effective and resulted in minimum fruit drop, maximum fruit retention, fruit length, diameter, weight, volume, fruit pulp content, TSS, TSS: acid ratio and ascorbic acid. Thus, two sprays of Borax @ 1.0%, first after seven days of initiation of growth and second spray in last week of June was found most effective in reducing the fruit drop and increasing the physico-chemical characters of fruits. |
