Description |
The present investigation entitled “A study on extent of adoption of hybrid rice production technology by the tribal farmers of Surguja district of Chhattisgarh” was carried out during 2010-2011 in four selected blocks of Surguja district. A total of 160 hybrid rice growers (40X4= 160) were selected randomly as respondents and data were collected through personal interview method with the help of structured interview schedule as per objectives and variable of the study. The data were tabulated and analyzed statistically to draw appropriate conclusions. The findings of this study revealed that majority of the respondents were found in middle age group (36 to 55 year) and educated up to primary level having medium size of family (6 to 10 members) with membership in more than one organization. Majority (66.25%) of the respondents had medium experience of hybrid rice cultivation and they were involved in Agriculture + Labour works. Maximum number of the respondents were having medium size of land holdings (2.1 to 4 ha) and surviving with the range of Rs. 20,001 to Rs. 40,000 annual income. Majority of the respondents had also obtained short term credit from co-operative societies. Majority of the respondents had medium contact with extension personnel and they were utilizing television and radio, printed materials, etc for receiving the information about agricultural technology. More than half of the respondents (54.37%) were having medium level of knowledge about hybrid rice production technology. About 65.00 per cent of the respondents had medium extent of adoption regarding hybrid rice production technology. Among all the hybrid rice varieties, Arize-6444 was found popular and which is adopted by 73.75 per cent hybrid rice growers. The average hybrid rice productivity on farmers‟ field was recorded 39.30 q/ha-1. Majority (83.75%) of the respondents were continuously growing the hybrid rice because by hybrid rice they got much higher yield than the existing improved rice varieties. Correlation coefficient analysis was done and it was found that out of fourteen variables, ten variables viz. education, social participation, experience of hybrid rice cultivation, size of land holding, scientific orientation, level of knowledge, contact with extension personnel, credit acquisition, irrigation facilities and sources of information were found to be positively and highly significant correlated with extent of adoption about hybrid rice cultivation. Multiple regression analysis was done and it was found that out of 14 independent variables, the eight variables viz. education, experience of hybrid rice cultivation, level of knowledge, sources of information, size of land holding, credit acquisition, scientific orientation and contact with extension personnel had positive and significant contribution towards extent of adoption about hybrid rice production technology. The results of multiple regression show that all the 14 independent variables jointly contributed variation towards extent of adoption of hybrid rice production technology up to extent of 68.17 per cent. The major problems faced by the respondents in adoption of hybrid rice production technology were poor contact between farmers and agriculture officers & scientist, lack of knowledge about identification and control of insects-pest and disease, control measure of diseases and proper dose of fungicides, inadequate irrigation facilities, poor education status of farmers, selling of expired/ adulterated hybrid rice seed by shopkeepers and inadequate and untimely supply of desired inputs. The major suggestions given by the respondents for solving the problems in adoption of hybrid rice production technology were regular contact should be made among farmers and agriculture officers & scientist, irrigation facility should be provided, information must be provided in proper time and compensation should be provided in case of crop failure. Some other suggestions like adulteration in seed, pesticides etc. should be checked and regular training programme and demonstration should be conducted, etc. may also be viewed seriously by the competent authority as suggested by the farmers. |
