Description Rice is an important crop, feeding more than half of the world’s population. Drought
is major constraint affecting the production. F2 population of Moroberekan/IR64 and
MAS26/IR50 rice crosses were evaluated under low moisture stress in aerobic condition for
eighteen drought and yield related traits. Eleven trait specific SSR markers were used to
screen Moroberekan/IR64 population for selecting plants with more number of positive
alleles and among these four markers were used to validate leaf rolling (LR) (RM235 and
RM263), seedling vigour (RM21) and yield under drought stress (RM11943). Three of eleven
markers were distorted from expected 1:2:1 ratio indicated the presence of segregation
distortion (27.3%) in rice. Grain yield plant-1 (YLD), biomass yield (BY) and LR has shown
highest PCV and GCV, LR, spikelet fertility and spikelets panicle-1 shown high heritability.
Whereas LR, BY and YLD shown high genetic advance as percent mean in both population.
Phenotypic correlation revealed that grain yield has high positive association with BY,
harvest index (HI), number of productive tiller plant-1, panicle weight and panicle exsertion
whereas negative association with LR. Path analysis indicates high positive direct effect of
BY and HI whereas high negative indirect effect of LR via other traits on grain yield. Top 10
superior transegregants based on yield in both the populations were found drought tolerant as
they showed low/no leaf rolling. Plant number 153 has got 8 positive allele and 5 plants got 7
positive alleles and single marker analysis for four markers were found to be not validated.
