Description A field experiment was conducted at Agronomy research farm, CCS Haryana
Agricultural University, Hisar, Haryana during kharif 2012. Three pre-emergence herbicides
viz., atrazine 750 g/ha, atrazine 500 g/ha+1 HW 35 DAS and pendimethalin 1000 g/ha and
one post-emergence herbicides viz., tembotrione (Laudis 42% SC) 120 g/ha + S 1000 ml/ha
(10-15 DAS/2-4 leaf stage) were compared with weed free and weedy check. Three main plot
treatments and six sub plot treatments were tested using a split plot design with four
replications. Climatic data revealed that rainfall received during the experimental period was
393.6 mm which was 26.1 mm more than the normal rainfall of the past 30 years. During
cropping season, 321.7 mm rainfall was received. It was well-distributed up to October which
resulted in good crop stand and growth. Important weed species observed in the experimental
plots were Cyperus rotundus, Echinochloa colona, Trianthema portulacastrum and Digera
arvensis. Application of atrazine 750 g/ha recorded significantly lower weed population, dry
weight of weeds and higher weed control efficiency at all growth stages with good crop
growth. Whereas, in planting methods, zero tillage recorded lowest weed population, dry
weight of weeds and higher weed control efficiency at all growth stages with good crop
growth. In weed control method, effective control of weeds, higher grain and stover yield, net
income and B:C were obtained with application of atrazine 750 g/ha, whereas in planting
methods, zero tillage recorded higher grain and stover yield, net income and B:C.
