Description ABSTRACT
The present investigations entitled ?Performance of Morus indica Linn. under nursery condition ? was conducted at the experimental nursery of the Department of Silviculture and Agroforestry, College of Forestry, Dr Y S Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, Solan (HP) during the year 2012-2013. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Block Design (Factorial) with three replication. The study investigated the effect of IBA ? chemical formulations, provenances and diameter classes on rooting behavior of Morus indica. The IBA concentrations ranged from 0.4 to 1.0%. Cuttings were collected from four different provenances namely Nauni, Dhaulakuan, Jacch and Hamirpur and were planted in nursery seed bed. Per cent sprouting, rooting, survival and growth characteristics differed significantly between treated and untreated cuttings. Cuttings from Hamirpur and Nauni provenances exhibited overall better performance in all the parameters. In diameter classes, diameter greater than 1.25 cm showed significantly better performance as compared to lower diameter classes. Treatment of cutting with the IBA- formulation of 0.6% significantly maximized sprouting (79.63%), rooting (74.06) and survival (70.14%) per cent. Nauni and Dhaulakuan provenances are found best among provenances for mineral nutrients and proximate principles. The percentage of proximate fodder analysis, viz., crude protein, crude fibre, total ash content, ether extract, and nitrogen free extract ranged from 18.18-18.50%, 10.27-14.34%, 10.87-13.83%, 5.95-7.22% and 49.16-52.69% respectively and mineral nutrient analysis recorded value of N, P, K, Ca and Mg ranging between 2.90 to 2.96%, 0.53 to 0.62%, 1.57 to 1.69%, 3.71 to 3.82% and 0.82 to 0.86% respectively. This species is considered as a moderate fodder species on which farmer bank up during the lean period when the grasses are dry, less digestible and unpalatable. Nauni and Dhaulakuan provenance exhibited maximum value of mineral nutrients and proximate principles and showed variation in the composition of fodder nutritional value of leaves. Promotion of multipurpose tree will go a long way in mitigating the fuel and fodder requirements of the people of hill states
