Description ABSTRACT
The investigation entitled “Effect of mulch, spacing and training system on yield and
quality of tomato” was carried out at experimental farm of the Department of Vegetable Science,
Dr. Y.S. Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, Solan (H.P.) during the year 2009-
10 and 2010-11. The experiment comprised of four plant spacings (S1=45 x 30 cm, S2=60 x 30 cm,
S3=90 x 30 cm and S4=120 x 30 cm), three mulches (M1=black polyethylene, M2= straw mulch and
M3=control) and three training systems (T1=one stem, T2=two stem and T3= untrained). Thus, there
were 36 treatment combinations which were replicated thrice in Split-Split Plot Design. A popular
hybrid ‘Solan Garima’ released by the department used as planting material in the present studies.
The seed was sown in second week of April. The observations were recorded on number of days
to first picking, average fruit weight (g), fruit length (cm), fruit width (cm), number of fruits per
cluster, number of fruits/plant, yield (kg)/plant, yield (kg)/plot, plant height (cm), harvest duration
(days), TSS (oBrix), ascorbic acid (mg/100g), pericarp thickness (mm), shelf life (days), weed
incidence (%), soil temperature (oC), incidence of buckeye rot (%) and Alternaria blight severity
(%). Among different spacings, 90 x 30 cm gave maximum fruit weight, fruit length, fruit width,
maximum number of fruits/plant, highest yield/plant. Among the mulch materials the use of black
polyethylene mulch proved to be most effective to increase the fruit weight, fruit length, fruit width,
number of fruits/plant, yield/plant, yield/plot, harvest duration, plant height, minimum days to first
picking, lowest weed incidence, lowest incidence of buckeye rot and minimum Alternaria blight
severity. With respect to training systems, one stem training resulted in earliest harvest, maximum
fruit weight, maximum fruit length and width, longest harvest duration and maximum plant height.
Two stem trained plants exhibited highest number of fruit/plant, highest fruit yield/plant and
maximum yield per hectare and was significant over untrained control. The first order interactions
viz., spacing x mulch, mulch x training and spacing x training significantly affected most of the
characters under study. Maximum fruit yield was obtained with treatment combinations of S1M1
(black polyethylene mulch applied with 45 x 30 cm spacing), M1T2 (black polyethylene mulch with
two stem training) and S2T2 (60 x 30 cm spacing with two stem training). Further in three factor
interaction, the highest fruit yield (88.0 t/ha) of Solan Garima with maximum net returns
(` 486232.57) and highest cost benefit ratio (1:2.23) was obtained with the treatment combination
of 60 x 30 cm spacing, black polyethylene mulch and two stem training system (S2M1T2).
