Description The present study was conducted with broad objective of studying the farming performance and entrepreneurial behaviour of sugarcane farmers of north coastal Andhra Pradesh and to study influence of their personal characteristics on entrepreneurial behaviour, farming performance and relationship of entrepreneurial behaviour characteristics with farming performance. The problems faced by the sugarcane farmers and their suggestions to formulate a strategy for developments of sugarcane enterprise and sugarcane farmers were also elicited.
Ex-post- facto research design was followed in the present investigation.
Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram and Srikakulam districts of north coastal zone of Andhra Pradesh were purposively selected for investigation on the basis of predominant area under sugarcane cultivation. Two mandals from each of the three districts, two villages from each selected mandal thus 12 villages were selected. A total of 180 sugarcane farmers, 15 from each village were selected randomly.
Twelve independent variables, ten entrepreneurial behaviour indicators and four components of farming performance were identified for the study. Index was developed for entrepreneurial behaviour and farming performance by weighted mean score method given by 35 expert judges in the field of agriculture.
Data were collected from the respondents through pre-tested structured interview schedule individually.
Majority of the sugarcane farmers were middle aged, with middle school to high school education, small to medium farm size holdings, medium family size.
xiii
They were in medium farming experience, annual income, social participation, extension contact, and training received, scientific orientation, economic orientation and level of aspiration.
Majority of the farmers had shown medium level of entrepreneurial behaviour. With respect to entrepreneurial behaviour components majority of farmers had shown medium to high innovativeness, risk bearing ability, decision making achievement motivation, self confidence and medium to low level information seeking, management orientation, co-ordination ability, knowledge on sugarcane farming and differed gratification.
Majority of sugarcane farmers had medium farming performance followed by low and high farming performance. As far as farming performance indicators are concerned, sugarcane area index and cane yield index were medium to high, and profitability, adoption of recommended practices were medium to low.
It could be inferred from the study that education, farm size, annual income, social participation, extension contact, training received, scientific orientation, economic orientation and level of aspiration were positively and significantly related with entrepreneurial behaviour at one per cent level of significance.
Correlation analysis revealed that there was a positive and significant relationship between farming performance and education, farm size, annual income, extension contact, trainings received, scientific orientation, economic orientation level of aspiration and social participation where as age and farming experience had negative and non significant relationship with farming performance, family size has shown no significant relationship with farming performance.
Entrepreneurial characteristics of sugarcane farmers viz., innovativeness, risk bearing ability, decision making ability, achievement motivation, information seeking behaviour, management orientation, coordination ability, self confidence and knowledge on enterprise were found positive and significant relationship with farming performance at one per cent level of significance, where as differed gratification has shown non significant relationship with farming performance of sugarcane farmers.
The partial regression co-efficient values implied that level of aspiration, training received, economic orientation and extension contact were the most important variables that contributed to most of the variation in entrepreneurial behaviour of sugar farmers.
Annual income, extension contact, training received, economic orientation, and level of aspiration were the most important variables that contributed to most of the variation in farming performance of sugarcane farmers.
The partial regression co-efficient values indicated that, management orientation, innovativeness, information seeking behaviour, decision making ability were found positively significant and they are the most important components which contributed to most of the variation in farming performance of sugarcane farmers.
xiv
The step down regression co-efficient values indicated that, information seeking behaviour, innovativeness , management orientation and decision making ability were found positively and significantly contributed to most of the variation in farming performance of sugarcane farmers.
High cost of labour and of non availability followed by low cane price low statutory minimum support price, lack suitable machinery for small and medium holdings, non matching of issuing of cutting orders and transport arrangements smut disease in ratoon crop in variety 87A298, and lack insurance on individual farmer basis were the major problems expressed by the sugarcane farmers.
Increase of cane price at least by 40 to 50 per cent to that of present cane procurement price, supply of machinery for harvesting on custom hiring by sugar factories, proper monitoring system of cutting order for harvesting and transport arrangements to lift the cane in right time, NREGS works should be converged to sugarcane operations where labour requirement is more and organization of more exposure visits to well grown areas to make the farmers understand and adopt new technologies are the major suggestions given by the sugarcane farmers.
A strategy was also been formulated for enhancing the farming performance of the sugarcane farmers and development of the sugarcane enterprise by strategic involving institutions and organization like sugar factories, research stations, extension units, cane commission rate and department of Agriculture.
Technical strategies like development and supply of high yielding varieties with red rot and smut resistance and drought tolerance, standardization and promotion of fertigation schedules for drip irrigation, development of machinery suitable for small and medium holdings. Administrative strategies like enhancement of cane price, supply of farm machinery by sugar factories on custom hiring basis, monitoring system for cutting orders and transport arrangements, convergence of NREGS programme sugarcane crop, insurance for sugarcane, timely cane payments supply on of critical input on subsidy. Organizing capacity building programmers to farmer, establishment cluster level seed cane plots, demonstrations on farm machinery, different planting methods, micro irrigation, and popularization of ratoon management practices were given under extension strategies.
