Description Survey conducted during August-September, 1989 in
Chittoor district for the incidence of yellow vein mosaic
disease indicated that the bhendi cultivar Pusa S3wani was
the most popular variety of this area in which the disease
incidence varied from 65-95 per cent with a severity grade
of 4. Of the ten bhendi cultivars tested for their
reaction to yellow vein mosaic disease under natural conditions
Punjab Padmirii, MDU-1, Hybrid No. 7 and 8 were
completely free from the disease.
The plots treated with carbofuran soil application
(@ 33 kg/ha) at the time of sowing and two fortnight sprays
of 0.05 per cent monocrotophos recorded the least incidence
of the disease during both rainy and summer seasons. The
next best treatment was four sprays of 0.05 per cent monocrotophos
starting immediately after germination followed
by three fortnight sprays. These treatments not only
decreased the disease incidence and severity but also
increased the yield. The disease incidence was more in
summer season than in rainy season.
