The present investigation“Variability and inter-relationship among diverse genotypes of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.)” was carried out, on sixteen genotypes of cucumber. The objective was assessment of direct selection parameters (variability, heritability and genetic advance), indirect selection parameters (correlation and path coefficient). The experiment was carried out at the vegetable research form of Institute of Agricultural Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, during the rainy season of 2015. The experimental design followed was randomized block design and each line was replicated three times. Total nineteen characters of sixteen genotypes was recorded carefully. The nineteen characters studied were days to fifty percent germination, days to first staminate flower anthesis, days to fifty percent staminate flower anthesis, days to first pistillate flower anthesis, days to fifty percent pistillate flower anthesis, node at which first staminate flower appears, node at which first pistillate flower appears, number of staminate flowers per plant, number of pistillate flowers per plant, days to first fruit harvesting, number of nodes per plant, vine length, number of primary branches per plant, fruit length, fruit girth, number of fruits per plant, average fruit weight and fruit yield per plant. In case of variability studies highest genotypic coefficient of variation and phenotypic coefficient of variation was seen in traits like vine length, number of primary branches per plant, node at which first staminate flower appears, node at which first pistillate flower appears, number of staminate flowers per plant, fruit length and fruit yield per plant. These traits can be exploited during selection. High heritability and high genetic advance was showed by the characters vine length, number of primary branches per plant, node at which first staminate flower appears, number of staminate flowers per plant, node at which first pistillate flower appears, fruit yield per plant and number of fruits per plant. The characters which showed high heritability and high genetic advance can be further improved through simple selection procedure like pedigree method of selection or pure line selection. The characters with low heritability can be exploited through recurrent selection. Data on path analysis revealed that, the traits days to first pistillate flower anthesis, number of fruits per plant and days to first fruit harvesting has positive direct effect towards yield, so breeding programme on these parameters can be taken as an important traits for observation. |
