Description Finger millet (Eleusine coracana (L.) Gaertn.) is an important small
millet both as food and fodder crop. The present study was undertaken
to evaluate 100 germplasm for genetic variability studies and
morphological characterization for DUS descriptors. The present
investigation was carried out during kharif 2011 at Zonal Agricultural
Research Station, V.C.Farm, Mandya.
Genotypes were evaluated for extent of variability, character
association and path analysis for 18 traits. ANOVA revealed highly
significant difference among the genotypes for all the quantitative traits.
The genotypic coefficient of variability (GCV), phenotypic coefficient of
variability (PCV) and heritability was higher for seed yield per plant, ear
weight, ear grain weight, length of longest finger and inflorescence
length. Studies on the relationship of grain yield with yield components
revealed that days to fifty flowering, basal tillers, inflorescence width and
1000 seed weight shown strong positive association with grain yield at
both at phenotypic and genotypic level. Path coefficient analysis revealed
that flag leaf blade length, flag leaf blade width, inflorescence length,
number of fingers per ear showed positive direct effect on grain yield.
About seven, two and eighteen genotypes were identified as highly
resistant to leaf, neck and finger blast. And the line IE 5126 showed
resistance to both neck and finger blast.
Based on the characterization, eight characters were selected as
distinguishing characters besides example genotypes were also identified
for all the characters and sub descriptors which are useful in identifying
of new varieties for DUS characterization.
