Description The present investigation on "Varietal assessment and
variability study of rose (Rosa hybrida) in naturally ventilated
greenhouse under South Gujarat condition” was carried out at
Greenhouse, ASPEE College of Horticulture and Forestry, Navsari
Agricultural University, Navsari during the year 2008-09 and 2009-
10.
The present experiment was laid out on one year old
budded plant in Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with three
repetation. Ten varieties taken as treatments viz., Lovely Red,
Naranga, Passion, First Red, Gold Strike, Grand Gala, Sakira, Pretty
Girl, Gladiator and Noblesse. In this experiment variability was
assessed on the bases of morphological, biochemical and molecular
markers. The observations on growth, flowering and yield characters
were recorded as morphological markers and analyzed statistically.
Further, Superoxide dismutase (SOD) isozyme as biochemical marker
and Random Amplified Polymorphic DNAs (RAPDs) as molecular
marker were also studied. The similarity and dissimilarity was
recorded in NTSYSpc 2.2 software and for generation of dendrogram
using UPGMA method.
Among the morphological markers, variety Passion had
attained significantly maximum plant height and plant spread.
Maximum leaf area was observed in variety Naranga while, variety
Gladiator had maximum number of leaves per stalk and minimum
number of blind shoots. However, earliness for vegetative shoot
initiation was recorded in variety Lovely Red. With respect to
flowering characters, earliness in flower formation was observed in
Naranga. The flower bud length, bud diameter, flower diameter,
number of petals, stalk length, stalk girth and peduncle length were
significantly recorded in Gladiator variety. The highest neck girth and
number of thorns per stalk were found in Naranga. Grand Gala and
Lovely Red were found thornless among all varieties while, minimum
thorns were noted in Passion. Significantly maximum A- grade quality
(>65 cm) flowers were reported in Gladiator followed by Grand Gala,
Lovely Red and First Red while, variety Passion produced highest
flowers with respect to B-grade (55-65 cm). However, variety
Naranga produced maximum flowers of C-grade (45-55 cm). The
number of flowers per plant per year and number of flowers per sqm
per year were significantly highest in variety Passion followed by
First Red. In terms of qualitative characters with respect to shelflife,
vaselife and consumer’s preference score were found significantly
higher in First Red and Passion.
Superoxide dismutase (SOD) isozyme as biochemical
marker, the maximum similarity was observed between First RedPassion
and First Red-Gold Strike.
The maximum similarity (0.885) between variety Lovely
Red and Grand Gala was recorded in Random Amplified Polymorphic
DNAs (RAPDs) as molecular marker.
Looking to the economics of present investigation,
maximum net return ( 100107.5) and BCR (1.48) were obtained in
Passion followed by First Red (net return 91102.0 and BCR -1.44)
during both the years of investigation.
On the basis of results obtained in present investigation, it
can be concluded that Passion and First Red both the varieties
appeared highly promising in naturally ventilated greenhouse under
South Gujarat climatic conditions.
