Description |
The present study entitled 11Economics of Brackish water prawn culture in Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh was undertaken mainly to study costs and returns of prawn farming, and resource use efficiency along with marketing aspects. The study was undertaken in Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh, taking the entire district as sample area. Of the total 52 prawn farms existing, 40 farms were selected and stratified into two groups: small farms (below 4.8 ha) and large farms (above 4.8 ha). In each group 20 farms were selected, making a total sample of 40 prawn farms. Survey method was adopted to elicit the response from the respondents (prawn farmers) through suitably designed pre-tested schedules. In order to measure the efficiency of the resources used, analytical tools such as tabular analysis and the Cobb-Douglas production function were employed. Break-even analysis was carried out to know the profitability of the business. Human labour requirement per hectare was higher in large farms (359 mandays) than in small farms (317 mandays). The total cost of production per hectare of prawn farm was ~. 88,411.24 in case of small farms and ~. 84,648.42 in large farms, exhibiting an inverse relationship. An inverse relationship was also observed between cost concepts (Cost A Cost B and Cost C) and size of the farm. Net income per hectare was higher in large farms (~. 50,978.28) and lower in small farms (~. 24,865.16). Farm business income, farm labour income, farm investment income exhibited a direct relationship with increasing farm size. Large size group registered a higher input-output ratio (1:60) than the small farms (1.28). Results of the Cobb-Douglas production function analysis indicate that human labour had the significant influence on output in both the size groups. Seed in number in small farms and establishment cost, feed cost, and power cost in large farms have a significant influence on output. The MVP/MFC ratio of all significant variables indicates a greater p'otentiali ty for further investment in both the size groups. Results of the Break-even analysis reveal that t~ break-even output is less (229.29 kg) in large farms than in small farms (280.97 kg). The study of the price spread reveals that producer's share in consumer's rupee was 57.50 per cent. Marketing cost incurred by exporting units was 16.28 per cent of the consumer's rupee, and the margins obtained by exporting units was 25.62 per cent of the consumer's rupee. From the present study it could be inferred that brackishwater prawn production is capital intensive, requires latest technological innovations and a better marketing system along with adequate credit facilities for boosting exports to earn more foreign exchange to the Indian economy. |
