Description A field experiment was laid out in Kharif 1988-89
for the control of gram caterpillar, Heliothis armiaera Hubner
on pigeonpea crop with fourteen treytments viz., (1} Nuclear
polyhedrosis virus (NPV) 250 LE ha- (2) NPV 125 LE ha-l plus
monocrotophos 0.025 per cent (3) monocrotophos 0.05 per cent
(4) Bacillus thurinaiensis ( B.t. ) 2 g L- 1 (5) B.t. 2 g L- 1
plus fenvalerate 0. 05 per cent (6) Cartap 1.5 g ~1 (7) Cartap
1.5 g L-1 plus fenvalerate 0.005 per cent. (8) fenvalerate
0.01 per cent (9) fenvalerate 0.4 per cent dust ·(10) diflubenzuron
0.05 per cent (11) diflubenzuron 0.05 per cent plus
fenvalerate o.oos per cent (12) Alletin 0.2 per cent
(13) Alletin 0.2 per cent plus monocrotophos 0.05 per cent
and (14) control.
The maximum per cent larval reduction was obtained
with fenvalerate 0.4 per cent dust (95.84) while the least
reduction was obtained with cartap 1.5 g L-l (28.76). The
lowest per cent pod damage (9.35) and grain damage (10.85)
were obtained with fenvalerate 0.4 per cent dust while the
maximum per cent pod damage (28.39) and grain damage (23.16)
were recorded by cartap 1.5 g L-1 as against 37.61 and 28.73
per cent respectively in the control. The maximum grain
yield was obtained with fenvalerate 0.4 per cent dust (14.20 q
ha-1) and minimum yield with cartap 1.5 g L-l (5.45 q ha-1)
as against 4.4 q ha-l in the control. The highest cost
benefit ratio was obtained.with fenvalerate 0.01 per cent
(1:11.37) followed by monocrotophos 0.05 per cent (1:5.82).
In the present studies synthetic pyrethroids proved to be
effective in controlling ~· armigera and giving higher yiela~·
In the seasonal incidence studies the pi~eonpea
pod borers viz., tl• armilera, ~· testulalis and E. atomosa
were observed in the fie d from November to January. The
peak activity of pod borers was observed in the month of
December.
In the pheromone trap catches of ~· armigera the
moth catches were observed to be significant positively
correlated to the number of eggs (r • +0.888) in field.
In case of larval population, the larval population in
relation to trap catches was positive but nonsignificant
(r • +0.621).
