Description |
The present investigation entitled “Variability studies in Potato” was carried out in AICPIP, Bhubaneswar with respect to twenty potato varieties .Statistical analysis of fourteen quantitative characters were done for variability, heritability, genetic advance, correlation, path coefficient analysis and D2 analysis. The analysis of data revealed that there exist a wide range of variation for almost all the characters studied with particular reference to plant height, number of sprouts per plant, compound leaf area, compound leaf weight, number of compound leaves, fresh weight of the plant, dry matter percentage in haulms, days to maturity , yield per plant, yield per plot and yield per hectare. The values of phenotypic coefficient of variation and genotypic coefficient of variation were highest in compound leaf weight . High genetic advance and heritability were observed for number of compound leaves, plant height, number of sprouts per plant, compound leaf area, compound leaf weight, number of compound leaves, fresh weight of the plant, dry matter percentage in haulms, days to maturity and yield per plant. Number of compound leaves ,compound leaf area, compound leaf weight has significant and positive association with yield per plant. Path coefficient analysis revealed that total number of tubers per plant had the highest positive effect on tuber yield per plant followed by average tuber weight, plant height ,compound leaf weight, number of compound leaves per plant, fresh weight of the plant, dry matter percentage in shoots, total number of tubers per plant and average tuber weight. D2 statistics of the twenty varieties were grouped into 6 clusters .cluster V and VI are monogenic with one variety , where as cluster IV with two varieties, cluster III with three varieties, clusrer I with five varieties and cluster two consists of maximum number of eight varieties. Among the multivariate cluster, cluster 1V and cluster VI has the maximum inter cluster distance with value of 1319.427.The average intra cluster distance was maximum with cluster 1V(161.993). Qualitative analysis revealed that more dry matter in processing varieties like Kufri Frysona and Kufri Chipsona-3 with less reducing sugars. In the present study highest yield of tuber yield 22.18 t/hac,22.11t/hac,20.2 t/ha was recorded in varieties like Kufri Jyothi, Kufri Puskar and Kufri Surya respectively. The processing varieties i.e. Kufri Frysona and Kufri Chipsona-3 produce yield of 20.40 t/ha and 18.26 t/ha respectively. TSS .vitamin –C content and specific gravity did not varied much during the investigation. |
