Description The present study was initiated with the main objective to study the
changes in body composition during adolescence (i.e., 13-16 years); and to
assess the differences in body composition between boys and girls and also to
identify the factors affecting the body composition such as age, sex, physical
activity and nutritional status.
A total of 450 individuals (225 boys and 225 girls) were selected in
the present study, in such a way that the number of subjects in each age group
(13-14 years/14-15 years / 15-16 years) is 150 (75 boys and 75 girls). General
information regarding the subject’s family background, food habits, food frequency consumption, physical activity details was collected. Analysis of the
body composition of the subjects was performed using BODY STAT 1500,
apart from taking their anthropometric measurements (height, weight, skinfold
thickness) with standardized techniques.
It has been observed that majority of the subjects belonged to nuclear
families (76-88%) with an average family size of 4 to 5 members and most of
them belonged to middle/high socio economic status. It has also been observed
that majority of the subjects parents were well educated, with good
employment status.
Majority of the subjects were non-vegetarians and had a regular meal
pattern. It has been observed that more number of boys had the habit of doing
exercise regularly than girls and boys were more physically active and involved
in strenuous games and exercises. The anthopometric measurements of the subjects indicate that they
were almost nearer to the standard NCHS values and majority of the subjects
were graded as normal, based on weight for age and BMI classification. The
good linear growth of the subjects also indicated good nutritional status.
Sex-related differences had been observed during adolescence. Boys
had significantly larger body weight, height, lean body mass (% and kg), BMR,
% Body Water than girls. Girls had significantly larger fat mass (% and kg)
and SFT measurements than boys.
Significant age related differences had also been observed during the
adolescent period. The mean weight, height, LBM (% and kg), BMR increased and the LBM (% and kg) decreased significantly with age in boys. In case of
girls, there was a significant increase in SFT measurements, FM (% and kg)
and the mean LBM (% and kg) decreased with age from 13 to 16 years.
Physical activity shows its influence on body composition by
augmenting the LBM in those subjects who exercise regularly.
So the present study shows significant age- and sex- related changes
in body composition during adolescence and confirms that various factors like
physical activity, nutritional status etc… influence body composition.
