Description |
A field experiment was conducted on N.M. College of Agriculture Farm, N.A.U., Navsari to study the Feasibility of widerbv spaced rabi castor with intercropping of vegetables under South Gujarat condition during rabi season of the years 2011-12 and 2012-13. Out of ten treatments, two treatments comprising of normal (120 cm x 60 cm) and wider (240 cm x120 cm) spaced sole castor, fo ur treatments where in wider spaced castor was intercropped with onion, garlic, fenugreek and spinach and four sole intercrop treatments were tested. These ten treatments were evaluated in randomized block design with three replications. The soil of experimental field was clayey in texture and rated low, medium and high for available nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Experimental results indicated that normal spacing (120 cm x 60 cm) had significant influence on castor plant population at initial as well as at harvest stage and also influenced plant height at 90 DAS and at harvest over wider spacing of 240 cm x 120 cm. Introduction of vegetables (onion, garlic, fenugreek and spinach) with wider spaced castor did not influence significantly the plant population of castor at both the stages. However, wider spaced sole castor and all the intercropping systems were equally effective but superior to narrow spaced sole castor with respect to plant growth characters like, number of branches and number leaves plant -1 and various yield attributing characters. The test weight and harvest index of castor was not influenced due to different levels of spacing or intercropping systems. Castor sown at 120 cm x 60 cm spacing was found significantly superior to 240 cm x 120 cm spaced castor in respect to seed and stalk yields. The mean seed yield advantage under 120 cm x 60 cm spacing was 12.91 per cent over 240 cm x 120 cm spacing. Under intercropped condition, all the treatments were equally effective in respect of seed and stalk yield of castor. Onion crop either at sole stand or intercropped with castor recorded significantly higher green biomass yield. The green biomass yield of intercrops was reduced due to intercropping with castor and such reduction was minimum in cas e of spinach (3.48%) whereas, maximum yield was recorded by pure cultures of respective intercrops. Major nutrients i.e. N, P and K content in castor seed and stalk was not influenced to the significant extent due to spacing and intercropping systems. Whe reas, N, P and K uptake by castor seed, stalk and total were significantly higher in normal spaced sole castor (120 cm x 60 cm). Under intercropped condition, all the treatments were equally effective in recording the NPK uptake by castor. However, oil content in castor seed was not influenced due to different treatments. Organic carbon and available K content in soil was not influenced to the significant extent due to spacing and intercropping systems, however, wider spaced castor + onion recorded numerica lly higher organic carbon and available K content of soil. Sole stand of onion crop recorded significantly higher available N and P content of soil over sole stands of normal and wider spaced castor, but remained at par with sole stands of garlic, spinach and fenugreek as well as their intercropping with castor. The Land equivalent ratio (LER) was maximum (1.96) due to castor + fenugreek intercropping. LER varied when castor was intercropped with vegetables and the trend was in order of fenugreek > spinach > onion > garlic. Castor equivalent yield was highest due to intercropping of wider spaced castor with onion. So far economic assessment is concerned, maximum net realization of Rs.1,46,037 ha - and benefit: cost ratio of 4.06 were accrued with wider spaced castor + onion intercropping system. In respect of spacing, sowing of castor at normal spacing (120 cm x 60 cm) recorded maximum net realization of Rs. 74,578 ha -1 and benefit: cost ratio of 3.89 over wider spaced castor . Based on the findings of two years experimentation, it can be concluded that, short duration vegetables intercropped in the wider spaced castor (240 cm x 120 cm) were more productive and profitable than their sole cultivation. Intercropping of onion in the wider spaced rabi castor (240 cm x 120 cm) found to be more remunerative and beneficial with better growth and yield of both the crops. |
