A study was conducted to analyze the influence of breed, age, size and parity on bitches with fetal dystocia. Studies were also conducted to know the effect of fetal dystocia in bitches on haemo-biochemical profiles and also effect of different procedures in relieving fetal dystocia. The Overall incidence of dystocia was determined as 4.03 per cent in which maternal dystocia was recorded at an higher incidence than the fetal dystocia. Nearly 40 per cent of fetal dystocia recorded was in Pug and Laborador retriever. Further, highest incidence of fetal dystocia was recorded in primiparous bitches and bitches under four years of age were more frequently affected. Fetal dystocia was most commonly observed in small and medium sized breeds. In a majority of animals with fetal dystocia, the vital physiological parameters such as temperature, pulse and respiration were unaffected. Packed cell volume, random blood glucose and serum calcium also remained unaffected by fetal dystocia. Fetal dystocia in a significant number of animals could be relieved by simple vaginal manipulative procedures or whelping or sponge forceps. However, Caesarean section may have to be adopted as the first line of treatment in some animals with fetal dystocia. |
