A set of 91 diverse soybean accessions were analysed for 10 morphological traits with
special reference to water use efficiency using carbon isotope discrimination technique
(CID). The accessions with complete data on all the 10 quantitative traits were
subjected to hierarchical classificatory analysis using SPSS package. The Euclidean
distance was used as a measure of dissimilarity among the accessions and Ward’s
method was chosen to classify the genotypes and for drawing the Dendrogram.
Moderate variability for CID (19.95 ‰ to 22.91 ‰) was observed among the genotypes.
A significant negative correlation (-0.241**) between CID and maturity was observed.
Genotype DS 9813 (low CID i.e. high WUE) registering highest yield (19.9g/plant)
with other desirable characters such as early maturity (106 days), modest plant height
(64 cm), high pods per plant (84.6) and high seeds per plant (2.2) have been identified
as the potential genotype for high WUE. UPSL 309 (High CID i.e. low WUE) and
UPSL 244(High CID i.e. low WUE) which showed very low yield per plant has traits
complementary to DS 9813 (low CID). The cluster analysis resulted in 10 distinct
clusters. Cluster VIII was found to be the biggest cluster (23 accessions) among the set
of 10 distinct clusters. Clusters I, X and IX were of medium size containing 11, 13 and
8 genotypes respectively. Genotypes with low mean CID values were placed in cluster
IV where as genotypes with high mean CID values were placed in cluster II.
