The present study was conducted on variability, heritability, correlation and path coefficient analysis in diverse genotypes of bottle gourd ( Lagenaria ciceraria ( Mol.) Standl.). The objective was estimation of direct selection parameters (variability, variances, coefficient of variation, heritability and genetic advance) and indirect selection parameters (correlation and path coefficient). The experimental material comprised of twenty diverse genotypes of bottle gourd which were sown at the Vegetable Research Farm, Department of Horticulture, Institute of Agricultural Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi in summer season 2013 in Randomized Block Design (RBD) and treatment were replicated three times. The sixteen characters studied were days to first staminate flower anthesis, days to first pistillate flower anthesis, internodal length (cm), node number to first staminate flower anthesis, node number to first pistillate flower anthesis, vine length (m), number of primary branches per plant, fruit weight (g), fruit length (cm), fruit girth (cm), number of staminate flowers, number of pistillate flowers, sex ratio, number of fruits per plant, fruit set percent and fruit yield per plant (kg). In bottle gourd certain characters like number of fruits per plant, number of primary branches per plant, vine length, fruit length and sex ratio are the most important characters in context of the major breeding activities. In this study it was found that some genotypes performed well for many of these traits like VRBG 1003 had low sex ratio with high fruit weight and longer fruits, hence this line can be used for improving other genotypes. Sonali can be used as a donor for improving traits like number of primary branches per plant, number of fruits per plant and vine length. For major yield attributing traits like fruit length and fruit weight, TC092372 showed promising results indicating it as an source for improvement. Considering significant differences for mean performance among genotypes, it reveals that there is ample scope for selection of elite donors parents (IC042345, Selection1, DVBG104, IC092372, PBOG-40, VRBG var45, VRBG100, VRBG444, Sonali,) from present gene pool for improvement of bottle gourd yield. These genotypes had multiple characters with higher mean performance and thus can be used as donor in future breeding programme. |
