Present study entitled “Process Optimization for bioremediation of Chromium contaminated Soil by Microbes and Crotalaria juncea” was undertaken to Characterise the chromate resistant bacteria and fungi from chromium contaminated soil and to apply them in conjunction with C.juncea for an efficient sequestration of Cr(VI). C. juncea exhibited varied phtytoextration capability for Cr(VI) that relied on soil Cr(VI) content. The exposure of plant to best suited concentration varied plants’s potential to remove Cr(VI) from contaminated sites. Phytoremediation with C.juncea combination with the micro-organisms indicated conspicuous increase in soil chemical attributes at low and even moderate levels of Cr(VI), signifying the positive role of C. juncea with MR12 and MR14 for soil health improvement. The results implied that high Cr(VI) stress in soil, especially combination of Cr(VI)5 with mixed culture of P.xylanilyticus MR12 and S.monosporum MR14, affected the nodulation and nitrogen fixation in C. juncea up to some extent but still indicated the plant’s ability thrive in such Cr(VI) stressed environments and N2 satisfactorily without being affected much. The substantial improvement in soil fertility indices along with N2-fixation at such moderate levels of Cr(VI) suggests the prospective role of C. juncea for soil restoration. As the Cr(VI) polluted soils often exhibited low nitrogen content and reduced fertility, these findings regarding the possible application of C. juncea for soil remediation and its quality improvement appears quite interesting, especially in tropical region, where the plant grow often. |
