Description Two separate experiments were carried out to evaluate early
(experiment I) and mid (experiment II) maturing cultures/hybrids in
Horticultural Research Farm, I.G.A.U., Raipur; during rabi 1998-99.
Seven treatments of potato were included in the experiment conducted
for early cultures/hybrids. In case of mid maturing cultures/hybrids,
eight treatments were tested. All the treatments of both the
experiments were replicated three times in a randomized block
design.
EXPERIMENT-I
1. Significantly higher yield of total tubers as well as marketable
tubers \vere recorded in cultures/hybrids MS/90-542 (2 1 8.26 and
213.89 q/ha) and JW-96 ( 193.84 and 188.43 q/ha) as compared to
other treatments tested in this study.
2. The- higher genotypic coefficient of variation was found for dry
weight of roots per plant, yield (kg/plot), tuber bulking rate, fresh
& dry weight of shoots per plant and tuber efficiency.
3. Tuber yield (kg/plot) showed positive significant correlation with
number of shoots per plant, fresh weight of shoots, roots & tuber
per plant, dry matter partitioning of roots and dry weight of shoots
& tubers per plant.
4. In this study, the highest positive direct effect on tuber yield was
observed through fresh weight of tubers per plant. However, per
cent dry matter of tuber, number of leaves per plant, dry weight
of roots per plant, tuber efficiency, fresh \veight of roots per plant
and plant height also showed positive direct effect on tuber yield.
On other hand, dry matter partitioning of tuber, dry weight of
shoots per plant, dry matter partitioning of shoot and dry matter
partitioning of root had negative direct effect on yield.
EXPERIMENT-II
1. The highest yield of total tubers (257.08 q/ha) as well as
marketable tubers (255.65 q/ha) were recorded in Kufri
Badshah. However, no significant difference was observed among
all the treatments for both the traits.
2. Dry weight of roots per plant, number of tubers per plant, fresh
w eight of roots per plant, dry weight of shoots per plant, tuber
bulking rate and number of leaves & stolens per plant had
highest genotypic coefficient of variation.
3. Tuber yield (kg/plot) showed positive significant correlation with
plant height, number of shoots, leaves & stolens per plant, dry
weight of shoots, roots & tubers per plant, per cent dry matter
of shoot and dry matter partitioning of shoot, root & tuber.
4. In this study, the highest positive direct effect on tuber yield was
observed through dry weight of tubers per plant. However dry
weight of shoots per plant, number of stolens per plant, number
of tubers per plant and plant height also showed positive
direct effect on tuber yield. On the other hand, fresh weight of
shoots per plant, dry matter partitioning of tuber, per cent dry
matter of tuber & shoot and tuber efficiency had negative direct
effect on yield.
