Description An experiment involving four maldandi based isoplasmic and allonuclear lines viz.,
M31-2A, CS 3541A, BRJ 364A and CSV 14RA and their corresponding B-lines were
compared for eight quantitative traits to know the influence of cytoplasm. Not much
difference was observed between A and B lines for majority of traits. However, significant
difference between A and B lines was observed for grain yield per plant, except CSV 14A
and B For 500 grain weight, M31-2A and M31-2B and CSV 14A and CSV 14B showed
significant difference.
To study the fertility restoration, three diverse sources of maldandi based male sterile
lines viz., CS 3541A, M31-2A and BRJ 364A were crossed with five lines. The average
restoration on BRJ 364A (76.63) was highest among the all three maldandi based male sterile
lines. All five lines restored on CS 3541A, two each restored on BRJ 364A and M31-2A.
This indicates that the restoration pattern differs when the nuclear background of the
genotype is changed.
Inheritance of fertility restoration for two crosses viz., CS 3541A ? BRJ 62 and CSV
14RA ? BRJ 62 showed 15:1 ratio indicating two duplicate genes control fertility restoration.
The cross M31-2A ? BRJ 62 showed 3:1 ratio indicating that single dominant gene governse
fertility restoration.
To study the heterosis and combining ability three maldandi based male sterile lines
(M31-2A, BRJ 364A and CS 3541A) were crossed with five testers in a line ? tester design.
Many of the crosses figured as most productive as well as most heterotic. Present study
revealed that heterotic hybrids could be obtained through combinations of gca like H ? H, H
? L and L ? H. Association between sca and heterosis, sca and crosses per se was positive
and significant, whereas no association was observed between gca per se.
