Description A field experiment was conducted to study the effect of iron on yield and
quality of grape in calcareous Vertisol during 2004-05 at the Horticulture Research Station
Tidagundi (Bijapur), University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad. The experiment
consisted fifteen treatments with three replications and was laid out in randomized block
design.
The results of the investigation indicated that application of ferrous sulphate to soil,
foliage and their combination significantly increased the yield and improved the quality of
grape.
Among the iron levels, application of 50 kg FeSO4 per ha with 0.2 per cent foliar
sprays of FeSO4 at 20 and 40 DAP recorded the highest growth and yield parameters viz.,
shoot length (87.33 cm) and number of leaves (18.67), bunch breadth (5.05 cm), bunch length
(12.60 cm), bunch volume (61.76 ml), diameter of berries (14.56 mm), number of berries per
bunch (162.00), yield per bunch (225.76 g), yield per vine (7.91 kg) and yield per ha (26.32
tonnes) and it was on par with treatment receiving 37.5 kg FeSO4 per ha with 0.2 per cent
foliar sprays at 20 and 40 DAP but significantly superior over rest of the treatments.
Higher juice per cent (61.96), total soluble solids (23.75 B0), total sugar (20.08%),
reducing sugar (17.90%), non-reducing sugar (1.63%) and lowest acidity (0.53%) were also
registered in the treatment receiving 50 kg FeSO4 per ha with 0.2 per cent FeSO4 at 20 and 40
DAP.
Economic analysis clearly indicated that the net returns and B:C ratio due to
combined soil and foliar application of iron sulphate @ 50 kg FeSO4 per ha with 0.2 per cent
FeSO4 at 20 and 40 DAP was the highest (Rs. 332882.37/ha and 2.72 respectively) in making
this production practice more profitable.
