Description |
Banana is very important as a fruit crop for millions of people in the world. The culinary banana assumes a greater significance in coastal parts of Odisha. The low yield levels of the culinary banana are attributed to the dreaded wilt disease caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense (Foc) assuming severe proportions in the acidic soils of the area. The option of integrating several disease control approaches with the use of chemicals, biocontrol agents and plant product has been exercised in the present experiment. The experiment was conducted in Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology during 2013-14 in a Complete Randomized Block Design with three replications. The use of biocontrol agents, namely, Trichoderma viride and Pseudomonas fluorescens both as sucker treatment and soil drenching twice proved very effective in controlling wilt disease and increasing the growth of banana plants. Growth parameters like pseudostem height, girth, number of leaves, and leaf area increased significantly by this treatment. Percentage leaf area affected by the disease reduced significantly. This treatment also increased banana yield significantly up to 21.30 t/ha in comparison to 7.97 t/ha in the control. |
