Description The present study entitled “An evaluation of investment in floriculture in chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh” was intended to examine the investment, costs and returns and marketing of flowers.
Multistage stratified purposive cum random sampling technique was used for the selection of mandals, villages and the farmers. Farmers numbering 30 under each crop were selected randomly making the ultimate sample size to 60. The primary data for the year 2010-2011 were collected through a pre-tested schedule by survey method. Both conventional analysis and project evaluation techniques were used to analyze the data and to arrive at valid conclusions.
The total labour utilized for the establishment of jasmine and crossandra was 222.61 and 76.45 mandays per hectare respectively. The same was 5,896.2 and 1.640.54 per hectare during the blooming period of jasmine and crossandra respectively.
The establishment cost of jasmine and crossandra gardens were Rs.71,705.40 and Rs.29,561.60 per hectare respectively. The total cost per hectare of above flower crops were Rs.10,26,195.16 and Rs.3,17,381.20 per hectare for the entire blooming period respectively.
The total net income derived by the farmers during the economic life period of jasmine and crossandra was Rs.3,36,315.56 and Rs.1,38,378.80 per hectare respectively. On an average for the entire economic life period the respondents incurred Rs.54.22 and Rs.104.46 to produce a kg of jasmine and crossandra respectively.
The result of project evaluation techniques reveled that NPW and B-C ratio for jasmine were Rs.1,41,556.50 and 1.49 respectively at 24 per cent discount rate. For crossandra the NPW and the B-C ratio at the above discounted rate were Rs.1,04,602.30 and 1.77 respectively. The IRR in jasmine and crossandra cultivation was found to be 111 and 268 per cent respectively.
The producer’s share in consumer’s rupee was found to be 59.48 per cent in the case of jasmine while the same was 71.03 per cent in the case of crossandra.
