The Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) are aptly regarded as the backbone of the Indian economy. The small scale sector occupies a position of prominence in the Indian economy, contributing to more than 50% of the industrial production value accumulation terms. The sector accounts for more than one third of the export revenue and employs the largest man power next to agriculture. MSMEs are recognized as one important constituent of the national economies. A Study on Rural Micro Enterprises under PMEGP in Guntur District of Andhra Pradesh was carried out during 2012. Respondents had been selected by using Random sampling procedure, thus making a total of 60 respondents and data was collected by personal interview method. The detailed analysis of profile of rural women micro entrepreneurs indicated that majority of the respondents were middle aged having medium Family size, medium in Socio-Economic Status, Self confidence, Entrepreneurial Experience, Innovativeness, Risk orientation, Achievement motivation, Economic motivation and Market orientation. The study revealed that majority of women entrepreneurs fell under medium level of Awareness and Extent of Adoption categories in micro enterprises activities. The correlation analysis revealed that Family size, Socio-Economic status, Entrepreneurial Experience, Self confidence, Risk orientation, Achievement motivation, Innovativeness and Economic motivation were positively significant at 0.01 per cent level of probability with Awareness of the women entrepreneurs. In the same way all the variables except Socio-Economic Status were positively significant at 0.01 per cent level of probability with Extent of adoption, whereas Socio-Economic Status was positively significant at 0.05 per cent level of probability with Extent of adoption, and Variables, age and market orientation were not significant with their Awareness and Extent of Adoption of the women entrepreneurs. The multiple linear regression (MLR) analysis indicated that all the selected independent variables put together contributed 82.39 per cent of the total variation in the Awareness by the rural women, leaving the rest to extraneous factors. The independent variables viz., Entrepreneurial Experience, Self confidence, Achievement motivation and Innovativeness of the respondents had contributed significantly at 0.01 level of probability towards Awareness, whereas Socio-Economic Status and Market orientation had shown significant effect on awareness at 0.05 probability level. While in case of Extent of Adoption MLR indicates that all the selected independent variables put together contributed 71.35 per cent of the total variation with the Extent of Adoption leaving the rest to extraneous factors. The independent variables viz., Entrepreneurial Experience, Self confidence, Risk orientation and Achievement motivation of the respondents had contributed significantly at 0.05 level of probability with their Extent of Adoption. Major constraints faced by women entrepreneurs were competition from other enterprises, unsuitable climatic conditions, Lack of cooperation from members, lack of transport facilities, lack of training in advanced skills, Lack of access to technical information, Improper marketing facilities, Non availability of drudgery reducing technologies, Not adequately involving in the decision making in family, Minimal support from family/society to participate in developmental activities, Secondary status for women, Un remunerative price for produce, Lack of access to resource/marketing, No motivational incentives to attend trainings, social mores and taboos, Less number of trainers, Less number of peripatetic trainings, Lack of infrastructure facilities, Lack of location specific units in contingent periods, Limited infrastructure for enterprises. Important suggestions were, Providing transport facilities, Providing marketing and storage facilities, Offering remunerative price to products, Adopting modern methods to perform the activity , Promoting co-operation among the group members, Extending supervision/guidance by organizational officials , Encouragement from men for women to take up microenterprises, Providing marketing and storage facilities, Providing easy and adequate credit facilities, Timely provision of loan amount, Creating awareness about income generating activities, Conducting training programmes related to micro enterprises, Imparting new skills to carry out the activity. |
