Description |
Microbiological quality of water from I.G.N.P. canal Bikaner was assessed on the basis of standard plate count, psychrophilic count, coloiform count, faecal streptococci count, staphylococcal count and E. coli count. The SPC counts of raw canal water samples ranged from 2.75x102 to 9.8x106 cfu/ml, psychrophillic count showed range from 1.15x102 cfu/ml to 4.9x104 cfu/ml, faecal coliform count showed range from 20 MPN/100ml to 900 MPN/100ml, faecal streptococcal count showed range from 11 MPN/100ml to 175 MPN/100ml, staphylococcal count showed range from 102 cfu/ml to 342 cfu/ml and E. coli count showed range from 07 cfu/ml to 42 cfu/ml. While SPC of treated water samples collected from water purification plant before water supply in Bikaner city was 9.5x102 cfu/ml and psychrophillic count was 1.25x102 cfu/ml. Treated water samples showed absence for faecal coliforms, faecal streptococcal, staphylococcal count and E. coli. On comparing the results of canal raw water samples with the standards were found it to be of unsatisfactory grade while treated 103 water samples were found to be fit for consumption. Further bathing points where maximum human intervention was observed resulted in maximum contamination of water. The ABST was conducted to find out effective antibiotic against Staphylococcus spp. and E. coli present in raw canal water. Chloroamphenicole, tetracycline and norfloxacin were found to be highly effective against the E. coli. Amoxicillin, chloroamphenicole, streptomycin and tetracycline were found to be highly effective against Staphylococcus spp. Rajasthan University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Bikaner - 334001 |
