Description |
A field experiment was conducted during rabi 2005-06 to study on the “Effect of FYM, Vermicompost, Neem cake and Biofertilizers on growth, yield and quality of brinjal (Solanum melongena L.)” grown on sandy loam soil at Students’ Farm, College of Agriculture, Rajendranagar, Hyderabad. The experiment was laid out in randomized block design with 15 treatments replicated thrice. The treatments consisted of control, 100:50:50 kg ha-1 NPK (recommended dose of fertilizer), 100% N through organic (20 t/ha FYM), 75% N through inorganic (163.04 kg urea) + 25% N through organic (5 t FYM), 50% N through inorganic (108.7 kg urea) + 50% N through organic (10 t FYM), 100% N through organic (2 t ha-1 neem cake), 75% N through inorganic (163.04 kg urea) + 25% N through organic (0.5 t neem cake), 50% N through inorganic (108.7 kg urea) + 50% N through organic (1 t neem cake), 100% N through organic (10 t/ha vermicompost), 75% N through inorganic (163.04 kg urea) + 25% N through organic (2.5 t vermicompost), 50% N through inorganic (108.7 kg urea) + 50% N through organic (5 t vermicompost), 75% N through inorganic (163.04 kg urea) + 2 kg ha-1 Azospirillum; 50% N through inorganic (108.7 kg urea) + 5 kg ha-1 Azospirillum; 75% N through inorganic (163.04 kg urea) + 2 kg ha-1 Azotobacter and 50% N through inorganic (108.7 kg urea) + 5 kg ha-1 Azotobacter. Recommended dose of phosphorus and potassium (50:50 kg ha-1) will be applied to all treatments except T1. The results of the present investigation revealed that among the different traits, the plant height (51.27 cm), number of leaves plant-1 (82.53) , number of branches plant-1 (13.26), leaf area (4566.26 cm2) at harvest were highest with the application of 75% N through inorganic (163.04 kg urea) + 25% N through organic (25 t ha-1 vermicompost). This was followed by 50% N through inorganic (108.7 kg urea) + 50% N through organic (5 t ha-1 vermicompost) recording 50-60 cm, 79.53, 12.73, 4257.82 cm2 respectively. The yield parameters like days taken for initiation of flowering (44.80 days), days taken for 50 per cent flowering (70.33), number of flowers plant-1 (57.99), percentage of fruit set (72.88) were highest with T10 treatment and was on par with T11 treatments. The treatment T10 also recorded the highest number of fruits plant-1 (40.49), fruit length (10.73 cm), fruit diameter (10.83 cm), weight of fruit (34.63 g), fruit weight plot-1 (13.20 kg) and yield (43,999.94 kg ha-1) which was on a par with T11 treatment. The quality parameters like titrable acidity (0.0170), pH (7.65) recorded were lowest with application of inorganic and biofertilizer treatments, but application of inorganic and organic manure recorded low peel (2.18 g), maximum pulp (15.72 g) and number of seeds (1721.67) per brinjal. Seed weight recorded was non-significant. |
